Motorola MDT 9100-386. CRT equipped vehicle computer for radiocommunications. On the inside it's a 25mhz 386SX with 4mb ram onboard, SCSI, dual serial, parallel, 640x480 monochrome VGA, two PCMCIA slots and 4mb of flash memory. 9100 machines show up on ebay a few times a year but it's rare to get the -386 model which is about the best unit you could get in this package and this one had a lower than usual price because it looks like it was sitting outside for quite a while....

Yeah, but holy crap that is cool looking and it sitting outside for awhile means it just has an even better looking Fallout look to it which = win.

Are you able to replace the bulb on the right side over the keyboard?

I am beside myself with how cool that is. Will you making a video? I'd love to see it in action!

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

Sure can. The diffuser snaps off and there's a little incandescent similar to those old glass cartridge fuses but slimmer. I have no idea where to source something like that.

Will you making a video? I'd love to see it in action!

Gotta install it in the car first 😉 Stay tuned.

Right now it's bone stock. It POSTS, then loads XMS, then begins creating and unpacking to RAMdisks, then loads PC card services, then loads Windows 3 with a custom boot splash and then shoots you right into Motorola's utility for the radio modem and will not let you exit out.

CGS_8324.jpg

I need to get in touch with Trammell Hudson to see how he and his buddies managed to get it out of this locked-down mode so I can start tweaking things. He discussed the systems a while back before converting it. My idea is an in-car navigation system using an external GPS receiver installed in the trunk.

Edited: Also yes it just runs on 12v and has soft power control apparently.

No, what you should do is attach a retinal scanner to it and convert it into a Voight-Kampff machine. Take care of some skin jobs afterwards and save the freakin world my man.

Dammit now I have to add that to my list so I can set it up outside my front door like a Fallout 4 terminal.

Unfortunately now the rest of the Vogons will be scanning ebay for one for months.

Freshly purchased.. Been looking for this case for a while. Overpaid a bit IMO, but it was about 1/4 of what they go for on Ebay when they pop up there. It does include a full 486 build inside though, so for under $150 it isn't all that bad of a purchase. Tried to get the seller to go lower but he wouldn't budge, probably because he knew it would sell fast.

This specific case is something I'm looking for for years without any success. It was my first PC case ever, from 1992, housing a cheap ass 386SX 16. 🤣

Looks like those were used in police cars back in the 1980's.

Mostly in good condition. Except the missing vu meter back bracket and some other very small annoyances (like front panel led/button cables cut and then bandaided), it's actually in a very very good condition, considering I'm at least the third owner.

It accepts AT mobos of course:

What does the gauge do ?

It's a VU meter: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VU_meter

It supposed to have a backside bracket that realize the connection between the sound card and that dial but I don't have it.

Old store stock, probably, as AFAIK incandescents are mostly out of production.

That sounds like (pre-led) car interior light bulbs. They have the advantage of being very common in the era and 12v.

A bit of google-fu and it seems like they are called "festoon" bulbs.

Frack if I know how that name came about, but if you have the original, and a caliper i'm sure you can find something somewhat easy.

I still have the first Opti 930 based sound card I bought back in the early to mid 90's. Mine has onboard wavetable but I never had an issue with it with any games. You just have to have the correct driver/initialization program for it. I think some of the earlier drivers were not as good.

Cool! For 10 Euros I figured I couldn't go terribly wrong...

I've been on the lookout for a good PCI card with decent TV Out (easy screen capture) so when I ran across this Rage Pro Turbo PCI All-In-Wonder for just a couple EUR, I immediately grabbed it.

First All-In-Wonder card as far as I know.

Oh SNAP! That's amazingly cool.

I mostly finished the AT to ATX migration of my 486 last night and I'm (unexpectedly) amazed, too.

It's really a very good case. Very nice build, very confartable spacevise, can be unassambled easily to the bare skeleton, standard switches and leds (so I can easily replace the broken ones and repurpose the power button as turbo button), and so on.

I never ever liked or prefered a desktop case in my life, but this is clearly the exception that proves the rule. 🤣

I chose a desktop case just because I have no place in my "computer area" for an addtional tower, and only means to add a 5th computer to the exisiting setup is a desktop case under one of my monitors. I was experimenting the idea of a 386/486 class machine in a modern(ish) ATX case for a long time, that 3D printed AT/ATX faceplate sparkled it into action. Now (or rather, in a short time - need to sort out KVM issues) I will have 4 active retro coumputers(*) plus the daily driver. 🤣

Now only thing I'm missing is this:

8BIT ISA SERIAL I/O TO PS2 MOUSE

(*) 486 class, Pentium MMX class, Pentium III class, Athlon64 class

That little police car computer is so damn cool. If I even happen to run a fallout theme park I know what to look for!

I myself finally fallen for the temptation and placed an order at everybody favorite belgiam online shop around here 😀 So much stuff to play around with now.
