Should we start a new "Collecting rants" topic?

This isn't actually that bad an idea in a way. I'm pretty sure that there's a lot that can be said about this and not just the complaining or the bad side of it.

And my apologies for being offtopic with this here.

As long as tempers don't flame up, that's a great idea for us all to let out some steam, constructively, in these "covidic" times .

Nice! A few years back I had to repair an Ensoniq ASR-10 with the SCSI add-on board. I wanted to dump all my old songs from 25 years ago to Ableton and picked it up on the cheap as ASR-10s have become quite expensive. Once I was done I sold it off to another musician, cheap, who was going to do the same thing. Good luck on the repair.

thanks. the fixes are all basic. replace screen (contrast has gone), encoder (worn out), volume pot (took a knock in shipping) and add scsi2sd (replacing scsi zip). Should be less thant 30 minutes all up and will be better than new 😀 screen is just an off the shelf HD44780, common pcb size. replacing encoder needs desoldering but its like 5 pins. should be simple...

It's getting hard for the average man with a 30k a year salary to keep up.

Keep up? Seems like you had a quite strange attitude then. A hobby is for having fun (and wasting time), not to keep up with others. I don't give a shit about owning rare or expensive stuff. I get what I want to have in my collection, not more and not less.

I want the kind of collection people like Artex have. I actually don't understand Artexs spending at all, even for someone making a shit ton of money it would seem unsustainable. I'm convinced he is the son of a south American dictator or something.

And no, some items are not affordable to the average person. Anything Roland is $400+ now, anything usable Amiga is $1000+ for a working system, GUS's go for $300+ etc. All the coolest hardware is getting crazy expensive, and I don't think things like the GUS were particularly rare.

You will never find happiness in any hobby (or life for that matter) if your entire goal in a hobby (or life) is to equal or beat "someone else's". You will be endlessly disappointed.
Set your own realistic goals, and maybe in time you might meet or exceed what you envied, or at least you will have collected or obtained "stuff" (its just that, stuff.) that should provide you some level of joy or happiness.

If you spend your life envying others "stuff" and get obsessed over it, you will never be happy.

Yes, normal asking price for a A3000 and A4000. But these are the most expensive ones and not the measure of all things.

Kinda like taking a voodoo 5 6000 price and applying it to all 3dfx cards.

I have to laugh at the absurd triple digit listings for Voodoo 3s...

The v3 is an excellent card though. I would probably pay low triple digits for a nice example, if i didn't have a few already.

I gonna use them with Adder Smartview 4X Pro KVM switch I've bought few months ago for 20 USD. Look at this monster:

Now I wait for the last piece: the power supply. Then the fun will start.

Because having 1 ISA based Graphics accelerator is NOT enough, I decided to get another:

Will pitch it against the Cirrus Logic GD5428 on my 386 in Windows 3.1

And because I find it hard to walk past a cheap sound card with wavetable on it without pressing the buy now button:

dodgysoundcard.jpg

And because I trashed an old S3 virge with faulty memory, a replacement is needed to pretend I didn't butcher the original with my soldering Iron

Now just the ebay waiting for postage game .... its quite a long, drawn out game, living in Perth Australia.

I appreciate your honesty. Maybe we should start a support group 😀

Oh no, low triple digits is fine, I'm talking $200 and up silliness.

"Low" triple digits for a V3 is just crazy talk. Pretty sure I never spent over about $35 for any of my V3 cards. The only 3DFX card I spent triple digits for was a V5-5500 and that was $100 even if I remember correctly. The only one I would maybe pay more for would be a PCI V5-5500.

I do still have the AGP V5-5500 I bought new from CompUSA.

I sold the only Voodoo 3 I ever had four years ago for about 50 bucks, thinking I'd make double that.

I've yet to find another one for a price I'm willing to pay.

I own two: a 3000 which I got (on eBay!) for 20 bucks and a 3500TV which I got for free.

I got a V3 3000 PCI and paid $60 for it back in 2017 (used). Only mod was the fan installation and still runs.
