Today's $50 e-waste haul:

Some PS/2--AT keyboard adapters (both kinds), a MIDI cable, an AUI to 10BaseT media converter, some generic 8-bit network cards...

But the star of today's show is the VLB Super I/O, the first time I've ever found a VLB card "in the wild":

And this WD8003EP adapter, which has a really awesome feature: it's boot ROM can be configured to reside *anywhere* in the upper 512KB of memory, and it has a mode that lets you stick a 32K SRAM in the boot ROM socket! I already have one of these cards (with a couple of SRAM chips on their way) so I was quite excited to find another one. Even if it does look like it has been dragged through a paddock:

Anyhow, with a 16-bit ISA Ethernet adapter and a 32-bit VLB super I/O, my 486 build gets a little bit closer to completion... still need to find a VLB video card, though, so I might be waiting a while...

Two sound cards? Must have been an early Vogoner 😀

It looks new again! Did you repaint the rusting cover?

Yes. Turns out that Rustolium do a thing called "heirloom beige", which is as close to the original as I could get.

Does it do something well? It's not one with COVOX support is it? That would be cool.

I think COVOX support was on NX Pro Extra line (which I had back in 1994). This one seems to be an earlier model.

I always wondered whether the Covox support was practical for anything. Not sure if there was anything COVOX exclusive and it is always better to use Sound Blaster when you can.

Picked Speedstar SE VLB for my review.

This one has CL-GD5430 chipset which is finally 32bit compared to the very common GD542x series. So I predict this might be the first Cirrus Logic VLB card I might actually like.

Also whilst shopping for VLB cards I gambled on this heavily corroded STB Horizon-VL.

It might be a total loss, but vinegar and isopropanol bath can do miracles sometimes. And if not at least the DRAM chips might be salveagable.

Give it a good vinegar bath, a water wash and some IPA cleaning. It would work like a charm.

Against my better judgement I bought this NOS (and possibly POS) ATX PSU for $5. It has a -5V rail, so I will use it with an ATX to AT adapter in one of my AT cases.

Paid more than I wanted to but probably much less than the value the card. Sort of surprised it didn't go for more based on rarity.

I was watching that card. Was mostly just curious to see how much it went for as I already have 2 of these cards. Pretty sure one of them came in some random lot of stuff I bought and I didn't pay much at all for the other one.

Hard to put a value on a card while most people are probably looking to purchase their AWE64 gold or some SB16 will pass over it without giving it a 2nd thought.
Only collectors seem to know about it. Its a pretty rare card that no one really looks for so if you try sell one of yours you might score big or get robbed in auction unfortunately. What I pay for it is ok considering what it is. real OPL3 with probably real GM samples on a 1mb rom. Doesn't require a TSR.

Gotta love isa cards with onboard sample sets. I have aztech, ess and opti versions, not to mention terratec, yamaha and televideo(crystal). The ess one is my favorite as it's so easy to configure and sounds good enough. Obviously the terratec and yamaha have the best sample sets and synthesis.

Two vintage trackballs (in need of good clean) and one new one. Did it mainly for the Trackman Marble FX.

I got this Siemens w26361 w10 with a pentium iii 700/256/100 for about nothing along with a ton of other stuff.
Anyone know something about it? It's an OEM so is it worth having? I guess it can't do 133 fsb since it came with that processor.
Chipset is FW82443BX

Siemens are very nice, they designed these boards. So it might have different designs that stand apart from others.

Cheers,

Nice, I got a couple trackballs but they make my hand hurt after ahwile which is the opposite effect of how theyre advertised

That's why I have so many of the things - everyone has different hands and different ways they hold stuff, which can also differ from situation to situation.

Still haven't found anything that suits me better than the MS Trackball Explorer, and it's a crying shame almost no one does anything in that asymmetric finger-ball design any more (except incredibly crap A4 stuff and Elecom's insanely huge offering). But the quest goes on, and even the Explorer isn't best in all cases, on the train I prefer the big Kingston Expert Mouse designs.
