Well, I managed to find myself yet another vintage Macintosh, this time one of the First-Gen PPC based machines that has that nice guitar boot chime.

Here's a shot of that nice old processor, after the literally 26 year old thermal paste was removed.
image1.jpg

And nicely, it came with 90 MB of total ram. I need to figure out what exactly is making it be so specific a number.

Nice machine!

Got an older model last week with a coax network card installed, I'll need to find some Ts and terminators...

You managed to score the one good 68k based Mac LC. It isn't crippled by having a 16 bit bus working under the 32bit 68030 like my LCII is, and can have enough RAM in it to comfortably run something beyond just 7.1. Enjoy that interesting little pizzabox.

I'll go RAM hunting and I might replace the hdd too, it's a bit slow to start spinning up.
After that, I'll probably try netbsd or linux/m68k at some point.

All you’ll need is a single 32 MB 72 pin module to max that max out, and finding a solution that works for you will be something good to do. Only go SCSI2SD if you can justify it for more than one device.

I have this same board but I'm experiencing voltage fluctuations with it. Love to know if you happen to run into similar problems with this board.

I've never owned S370 before but they're still cheap so why not. They're a bit boring though.

CUSL2 was meant to be a nice board for those I think. Wish I had one anyway.

Edit: Looks like you got a GF3 also, those seem to help out sub Ghz systems quite well, though of course they also get faster with more CPU under them.

Now I just need some hearing protection to go with it.

Remember, 50 is just a clockdoubled 25, and 66 is a clockdoubled 33.

The NexGen PCI motherboard actually came with this CPU installed - it's the actual photo and no, I didn't try and power on the system with it 🤣 I imagine someone put it in after taking the original Nx586 out. Since the motherboard still works, he probably didn't test it with it too.

While strolling through the flea market my eye caught something gold and shiny - IBM/Cyrix 6x86! Ive never actually seen a Cyrix CPU in person before, so I paid the dude the 5Euro asking price and got it home to straighten out the pins. Now I'm just wondering what kind of hardware I should pair it with.

Yeah, that's a bit squealy and the fan could use a lube job. Might need to do the old tube to the ear trick to direction find the particular squealer, unless you wanna blob everything with hot snot and cross your fingers.

Something like a HX or VX motherboard, check it does split plane voltages (Intel MMX) and a Rage XL/XC is the cheap DX5/6 option, cheap soundcards that are okayish are ESS, ALS and Crystal based. Try to get a cooler 25mm+ high, Cyrixes like to be cool. If you stick a 370/socketA one on there it might let you go up a speed grade.

wanted a GTS so badly when I was a child (had a MX) that nowadays I buy one every time I see a decent deal 😁

P.S. the one in your picture seems to be a GTS 32M and not a Pro, possible?

Just got this retro case as a new home for my Voodoo 3000 AGP (with PIII 1Ghz and LS-120 drive).
Bought it for the case but it came with some extras included 😀

The case is a real beauty, don't you think? But needs some refurbishing 😉
Any idea what build year it might be - pre or post y2k?
