That's amazing. Though bargains like that cost you a couple of hundred to make the most out of them 🤣

I don't know what friends you have, but most people I know in this hobby have their Smaug piles they pull from when they find a cool new part. 🤣

Sounds painful. Can you get a cream for it from the pharmacy?

Snapped up this AST Advantage! 7303 Desktop PC for a really good price. Will make a nice restoration project. Just looks like it needs a good clean. Not too badly yellowed.

All I know it has a Pentium 133mhz CPU and a 64mb RAM. Not sure what sound is on board. Interestingly it has 2 USB ports on the rear. Look forward to it arriving and diving into it.

I used to have that computer!

In fact I have the manuals for it in front of me right now...

And I think I still have the boxes (more than one iirc) and little bits and bobs that came with it all.

I see the PSU is set to 240, so either you got this from the UK, or live in the UK?

If the latter PM if you want them 😀

Well, I picked up a cute little Yamaha card earlier.

Yeah, an actually Yamaha branded YMF-724.

How is it? I am curious if it is a viable OPL alternative my ISA lacking rig. Even if it already has 3 soundcards atm...

Yep, the Yamaha cards have genuine Yamaha OPL3.

Speaking of OPL3 I don't think I'll ever get MIDI sounding the way my brain thinks it should without finding an ALS100 (nonplus) like I had growing up. I remember seeing tons of them when I checked a couple of years ago, but I can't seem to find anything lately.

Nice, plenty of choice then. Saw on the other thread you've got 1.0Bs in it. I too would be hard pressed to put together a pair of matching heatsinks. Though some cases that might be an advantage, tall one and a short one, or one blowing in a different direction to give mosfets airflow or something.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

I wanted to improve quality of my screenshots from retro devices. So I've done some research and purchased these two devices to help me with that.

Elgato HD60S+ (HDMI to USB-3 capture card) and OSSC (VGA to HDMI upscaler among others). I hope I can hook them together to have signal from my retro PCs on my Mac.

Those weren't cheap, so I hope I can get it working before my Amazon return window expires 😀

I have a T2150CDT myself. Remove the wake battery (open the hood, remove the main battery, move the plastic anti-static piece, remove the 4-5 screws, and remove the 7.2V NiMH battery and clean the corrosion off before it's too late.

If you need the drivers and utilities, I'll send a link to all of it.

Oh. Before I forget, a floppy drive from a Satellite Pro 400 Series will work with it as well (tested myself since the original broke on me).

So it turned up today and I checked where you said and there's just a coin cell rechargeable battery with no leakage?

The machine worked fine for about 15-20 mins - I got into Windows 95, even played some games, (even the battery worked for about 10 mins!) but I had a few random crashes then tried copying over some files from a CD and it froze and now I can hardly get it to boot at all- it just hangs on a bare DOS prompt even. Sometimes I've even had this screen saying the BIOS is damaged come up on a couple of boots! (Sorry for poor quality picture).

Are these easy to take apart? Is there a heatsink on the CPU or something that might need new paste? Is there a fan that's failed even? I'm going to leave it for a bit and try again later.

Cheers,
Steve

OK it appears to be a heat problem as I am running it with no issues for 15 mins or so now even doing some benchmarks with it balanced on my air conditioning unit set to 17'C! I'll strip this laptop down then and look for a heatsink that's loose or something.

Got it all fixed up now - there was some sort of gunk on some of the CPU pins that must have been shorting it out when warmed up - gave the insides a good clean and it's been running for hours now! Video due soon of this process 😀

Yeah, they are pretty scarce now. I snagged one a while ago for a good price.

If looking on eBay, it helps to do super broad searches because a lot of listings are not going to come up when searching specifically for ALS100

Have what I think is a Geforce FX 5900U or more likely an FX 5950U engineering sample on the way. Seller says it was pulled from a working system and is fully working.

Nice. I was coming up with nothing for the 8946 part number but I was pretty sure it was MSI due to it being red.

The other part number on the sticker was also not bringing up anything.

Gainward used that same design with a red pcb, but that MSI one has the correct cooler.

Please let us know if the Elgato HD60S+ works with 70Hz . If it does not, you may want to consider the Elgato Cam Link 4K instead as it definitely works with 70Hz AND odd resolutions/timings . See Re: VGA Capture Thread
