Now, the more interesting merchandise. A boxed and allegedly NOS 486 motherboard popped up for around $15, so I jumped on it and grabbed it. It was untested in unknown condition so I gambled my chances.

Whoa, that's a 386/486 Hybris motherboard with VLB? An AOpen Vi9 apparently. Not sure whether it's a valuable piece or collectable, but it sure is interesting to me! No cache, but I have spare cache chips from other dead motherboards lying around if I ever want to use it.

Of course it came with obligatory barrel battery leakage..

..which looked pretty horrible, particularly on that sticker at the bottom - I thought the traces were already lifted and gone.. But it actually wasn't that difficult to mostly fix with vinegar, alcohol and some scrubbing with a flat head screwdriver.

And voila:

I haven't tested it for POST yet but all the traces have continuity. I will do a POST test later tonight.

Well, this board does not seem to POST at all. Nothing on the POST card either. I tried it with or without cache installed, no dice. I get power to the CPU, it gets a bit warm and that's about it - nothing else.. Sad 😒

Beautiful board! I love that the layout has the CPUs sitting next to each other, rather than the often used layout, where they're offset.

Is it Intel, VIA or ServerWorks chipset?

The socket layout might be a problem for larger (80mm) heatsink/fan combos as I don't think they'll fit side by side, though as it's a 1U/2U board that probably wasn't relevant.

Haven’t bought much tech lately... but I stumbled upon an ASUS XP55T2P4. Although I don’t really need another S7 I just couldn’t resist. Supposedly has a dead PS2 mouse port - so I’m going to have some fun tinkering

Nice, that HardMPU is really excellent for DIY hardware, it's 'just worked' with everything I've thrown at it so far with my MT-100 and SB-155 (the less cool MT-32 and SC-55). You've got the proper one that ab0tj made so it should work really reliably 😀

This has been a really fun christmas, I got some laptops in; 3x Thinkpad 600 laptops (a 600, a 600E and a 600X) with various faults. Also a really cool 486 laptop with a DSTN screen. The hard drive was dead and the screen hinges were phyically destroyed (all the screw mounts cracked off so the screen flopped open & closed). That was fixed with some thermo plastic stuff to rebuild the screw mounts for the hinges. I was going to fix it more properly but this works surprisingly well, the hinges work again 😀
This PMD-5500 laptop is really cool since the screen can flip around like Creepingnet's NEC laptops, just without the touch screen. This is my favourite 486 laptop so far, no L2 cache, but it's got an Intel 486 DX4-100, an 11.3" DSTN screen that is in surprisingly workable condition and a soundcard with a Game/MIDI port. It's 60mm thick, one phat laptop!
The CMOS battery needed to be replaced, a VL2330, because the laptop wouldn't boot with a flat CMOS battery. The original battery wasn't holding its 3v charge anymore, but I'm super happy I had a replacement in the flat 😁

It's got a temperature controlled fan on the processor, so mostly it's nice and quiet 😀 And the guy that made the page for the PMD-5500 laptop was kind enough to scan the manual, which has solved a lot of mysteries.

Last of the haul. Gonna take some time to go through this and post proper pictures.

Bought a Matrox M3D yesterday. In working condition.
But now I just thought - are there drivers for XP so I can use it in my BP6 dual Mendocino build?

I'm not aware of any XP driver available for the NEC PCX2. Keep in mind: it is a 1997 graphics accelerator chipset. Windows XP came out much later in 2001 when NEC, Videologic and Matrox supposedly didn't have any desire or interest in spending ressources for a new driver of an obsolete piece of hardware.

I'm getting that itchy feeling looking at all that. Like I need to put out ads looking for old PC parts in the local classified ads again. Been a while since I had a haul like that to sort through... unless you count the huge pile of Apple II gear someone gave me recently. Somehow, it's just different with PC stuff because it's exciting to find something I know is rare or useful... with Apple stuff it's all totally unknown to me, so it was fun but was more of a learning experience than a treasure hunt. 😁

Nice ! The Asus P55TP series were all very good boards.
Ran into this looking around and am considering buying just because it is quite odd for a 486, sent seller some questions.
Anyone ever see a 486 board like this with onboard everything and still a regular AT style ?

Wow, never seen anything like that. Looks like CL GD5428 graphics onboard, with room for memory expansion? I wonder if it's 1MB or 2MB max. And what's with the memory chips near the RAM slots? It looks like it says OB MEM ENABLE... OnBoard memory? As system RAM, or as an IDE cache? All very strange.

Biggest concern though: That battery. What a bad location. Battery corrosion is undesirable in the usual location near the keyboard port, but it tends to be much more sparsely populated with traces. Up near the CPU, jumpers and VLB slots you could have all sorts of odd problems. I'd definitely ask for some closeup pics of the front and back of that area.

TechMedia 486 motherboard. Looks like up to 2MB max for the video chip. There are TechMedia systems for sale as well, but I'd rather not post the link on here.

And why a Varta Nickel Leakium battery is beyond me.

I wonder what Artex got for Christmas. 😁 His stuff is always legendary.

My latest additions 2x ATI 9800 PRO 128MB cards. They need repairs but they were also cheap.

Oh well, better get into an XP/ME dual boot then 🤣 Seller had screen shots from device manager, and I actually first thought it was XP, but it's been a while, so I'm probably remembering wrong ..
Just need to see if I can find the screen savers originally on the Matrox M3D CDs .. Those were legendary 😀
