Fortunately, you can use any CPU "above" the Pentsum 600, so maybe 1 GHz Pentium will be ok, I think it's "above", heh:)

1GHz PentSum would be ok, I'm not so sure about 1GHz Pentium.

Got the final piece for my Pentium 3 pc yesterday. I'm quiet happy with how everything came together.

Those exact Panasonic batteries are still easly available - I would install a fresh one to retain the original look and feel of the hardware. Nothing worse than seeing CR2320 coin cell on a hardware which should be equipped with 'barrel' battery.

I did not exactly „buy“ it - there was a neighborhood flea market this morning. I had a look, it was very small, and when I looked at this computer I was told I can take it for free. I don’t know if it works yet as the CPU is missing and right now I don’t have time to check it further. The mainboard looks like a FIC PA-2002..
It came with a soundBlaster Vibra, a WinTV PCI and S3 graphics..
There was also a matching HighScreen CRT but I did not take it due to space and weight..

Except the board being eaten by corrosion from a barrel battery leaking.

But that one is lithium so it should be fine with a new one.

Except that good quality barrel batteries (especially if are properly used and inspected) don't leak and don't cause any damage.

I've seen my share of shitty Chinese batteries that start leaking in a year that I have PTSD from them.

Other news I got one of those PNY AMD 586 upgrades from that bulk that popped up on ebay, theres been a lot of those kinda things on ebay lately including just the adapters, went from a rare thing to not so rare this summer.

Also I fixed that Maxi home studio 64 card with the bent pin. Was the most curious thing because it looked like it came out of the factory that way and I had to wick alot of solder off it before I could straiten it.

What normal consumer ever opens up a computer to do any sort of checks or maintenance?

IMHO, those NiCad barrel batteries should never have been used int he first place, but that is pretty much all they had back in the day.

It isn't just barrel batteries though. Pretty much any NiCad battery will start leaking at some point.

Yard sale day today, so for all in price of six bucks and a quarter I picked up this system with a PIII or something, 2nd pic, think it's badly configured though... 😉

Then also got an AspireOne netbook for another five. 1st pic.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

I love that design - I've got a Chieftec Dragon. It's so large it makes an ATX motherboard look like microATX 😁

I thought IBM was born with the world

Go figure. I found two DOS friendly sticks today. =) At least from what I've read the 3D pro is DOS friendly?

I already have a CH Flight Stick, and Flight Stick Pro, both of which need new potentiometers -- more so the pro.

Also software that I will never use. I'll put it next to my Windows for WorkGroup books.

Well the netbook came to life real easy, and nothing interesting was on it so did factory restore and it seems to be running XP SP3 as well as it ever did. Thought the battery was gonna be okay, coz it started charging, and went up to 100% but a reboot on battery and 10 mins of space cadet pinball drained it. A few mins of battery is better than none at all though for riding out brownouts and moving machine from one room to another etc. Unless maybe it recalibrates with use a bit. Interestingly machine has 2 SD card slots, one marked storage expansion, haven't tried SDHC in it yet though. Be cool if I can boot alternative OS off that, hey look there's a win98 graphics driver for i945. Screen seems crisper than other netbooks, not sure how, it's same res. Anyway, got an ultraportable "Athlon with a TNT" equivalent in more usable shape for gaming than 2 other netbooks I've got which have trashed keyboards, and they never seem to feel worth spending the $$$ on, maybe I should set up eBay alerts though to see if I can catch parts cheap. It's got a GB in, which with these models usually having 512mb soldered in, means a 512 in the SODIMM I guess, unless this is a unicorn with 1GB onboard.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

The Sidewinder 3D Pro is quite DOS friendly, it's got a selectable mode (o or oo) that makes it fallback to CH flightstick or Thrustmaster compatibility mode. This video covers the complexities of it really well: https://youtu.be/tSJLgCD8jeM?t=741

It's all optical in there, I found the x/y were quite good on mine, but the throttle was quite sticky. That was resolved by cleaning it and slightly loosening the screw it uses to connect the underside to that throttle dial.

Acquired this NCR chonker as part of a large tech purchase, just had to have it for that massive orange power switch alone.

Thanks! This has been really helpful. =)

I was wondering what that selector was for, I had it set to one while I tested it.

I tried it and the Thrustmaster in X-Wing, and both work. They both need a cleaning. The Thrustmaster has some rust that I can see, and the sidewinder is squeaky, but yeah the X/Y is good.

Gotta love that iMac in the stock photo.

Probably why someone had it NIB, thought it gave their Mac a touchscreen until they took it to their tech guy and he just laughed.
