I have a GUS ACE in my retro-PC. I am very pleased with it, it sounds great in Heretic and so on.

I also have a GUS PnP. I am trying to weigh up whether it is worth swapping the ACE for the PnP. I am sure I found some google results on exactly this question a few days ago, but I cannot find them now.

From what I understand, the PnP has superior playback quality and won't find it needs to throttle quality when an ACE might under certain circumstances. So for playing "scene demos" the PnP is a better bet.

At the moment this is only a games machine so will the PnP make the slightest difference to the sound and music in games like Zone66 and Heretic?

I own all GUS models...actually own several of each except the Extreme 😁
imho it's worth getting the PnP since the sound is much clearer and has more depth due to it's better playback capabilities...even the .mod playback is better

btw. do you have another sound card with joyport in use in the machine with the Ace?
I have 3 GUS ACE cards...two are rev 1.0 and one is rev 1.1, have tried it in circa 5 different 486/Pentium machines with different sound cards.....by just having the ACE card physically there my joyport gets disabled 😵

Hi Amigaz, I had the same problem with the ACE. Even using Gusdrive didn't change it. Could it be that the GF1 has a "build-in" gameport capability that is recognized by other cards, even when it is physically not there and/or disabled by software?

This is how the PnP sounds:

And this is the Gus Classic

What you hear is the Pinball Dreams intro music
The Gus Classic is basically the same card as the Ace in terms of technology

Yeah, It must be
What I find is odd though is that not many has experienced this...you are the first person I've heard having the same trouble as me 😀

I seldom use any game port.

Nearest I have come to conflict problems were with the EWS64XL I had run alongside the GUS ACE, but I thought that was down to some internal problem on the EWS [was related to use of a DB50XG on the EWS front box]. I never thought to remove the GUS ACE and see if that would solve it, so maybe when I try the PnP I've have another go with the EWS.

Amigaz, dude ! 😀 the GUS sounds a lot like Amiga sound but just more polished, wow as I have said before. It is no wonder you love the GUS.

Well, here's how the Amiga sounds (from my Amiga 3000)

http://sites.google.com/site/jivemaster2008/H … ?attredirects=0

imho the Amiga sound best 😎

Amigaz shall we say that the Amiga its sound which is raw, and radical. And the GUS has more polished sound, and it makes it more soft then ? 😀 since there is a connection between the love for the GUS and your Amiga too 😀 And can we agree that the GUS does sound a lot like the Amiga when it comes to sound ?

Yep, the Amiga sound circuits distrubutes the sounds better in stereo that the GUS and has better punch but the Gus PnP has better sound...the GF1 chips has about thw same clarity as the Amiga but worse stereo seperation

It's amazing what the Amiga Paula sound circuits can do.....tech. dating from 1984.
In AmigaOS you can squeeze 14bit 22050khz stereo with this ancient stuff

Yeah Amigaz, it is crazy to think that it "was only" 14 bit sound, but damn it was the best 14 bit sound I have ever heard on any machine. And even today I do enjoy and love the old Amiga. Even though I don´t have an Amiga anymore. Amigaz, please answer me in a simple no or yes answer, doesn´t the GUS sound a lot/a bit as the old Amiga computer did ? or are you afraid of some body on the internet will go mental on you, because you compared the GUS to the Amiga Paula Sound. Anyway the GUS is a lovely piece of hardware none the less 😀

The way stereo sounds different through the GUS or Amiga is not hardware related.

On the old trackers used on the Amiga (such as Protracker) there was only hard left and hard right.

When you use Screamtracker and play back one of these old MOD on the PC it will also only playback hard left and hard right, but playing back a more modern file, such as the Screamtracker format, the default panning will not be as hard as in the old formats. Default panning is only slightly off-center to the right or left.

I think the difference here is caused by the porting. Really, the GUS output sounds a lot more appealing. Listen to the Amiga output on headphones to hear this.

This is not a QEMM error.

@samudra

I guess it's a matter of taste, the GUS sound is techically more impressive but imho the Amiga sound more raw and has more punch

btw. love the new signature 😁

Basically, if somebody made an Amiga clone, they would probably use the GUS as a sound alternative to the RAW amiga sound. If they didn´t choose a real Paula soundchip. But still I understand Amigaz love for both.

Every Amigan I'd showed my GUS too always said it was like their Amiga but so much cleaner.

That was my first impression too when I first heard .mod tracks played thru my first GUS card.
Still like the Amiga Paula sound better....quite impressive for technology dating back to 1984 😎

Not to derail the thread, but for what it's worth, 14bit was almost the CD standard. In fact, the first batch of Philips CD players used 14bit DACS. On regular 16 bit players, I beleive those last two bits aren't used for music, but error correction.
