Hello,

I quite rarely ask for some support but I recently aquired a Orchid Soundwave 32 and couldn't find any valid download link for the driver disk for this soundcard.

It seems that Orchid Technolgies Webserver went down long ago and Diamond aquired it in 1998. They seemed to have it on their page for a while, but recently they setup an extra download server for drivers and most of the legacy stuff is gone (especially soundcards). Their old server now requires a ftp login.

So someone got an Orchid Soundwave 32 running and can dump me at least the DOS Utils to get it configured and even MIDI playback?

Thanks.

This driver is a fake, inside is Avance Logic AC'97 Sound System Software ver:A2.30 for Win98SE,2K,XP

Though I found at cd.textfiles.com a driver with version 1.3 for dos and win3.1. It seems to work.
A photo of the card:http://www.yjfy.com/images/oldhard/sound/Soun … ave_32_SCSI.jpg
I do not have the scsi version, but the Multi CD. So the back part is different. But this does no difference to the primary sound card part.

This card is in that way interesting because you can load DSP firmwares for GM Mode and MT32 Mode stating that also some kind of LA Synthesis is emulated. The usual MT32 Emulation does not feature this.
Though I tested with Monkey Island and it sound not really good.
Going for Dune2....

I aquired an Orchid Wavebooster daughterboard some time ago. I was also searching for an utility to switch between GM and MT32 mode (also in this case it is different, as the daughterboard has a common dream chipset) but didn't find one. Anyway I posted to the quest studio forum, perhaps the links there are useful:

So thanks for the queststudios link to a completely different thread (orchid wavebooster), but the mirror mentioned there also got SoundWave32 files.
I am currently downloading them as the server is incredibly slow <250 Byte/s yikes.

Someone PMed me and asked what I think about this card. Well this rating is based on the 1.3 driver.
The card has an AD SoundPort that gives SB DSP 1.2 and WSS. Then there is some Wavetable Part, I haven't removed the sticker yet. There are two chips a DSP by Analog Devices and the one with the sticker.

WSS works, SB works - not much to say here

Wavetable: According to Synrise it is 1 MB, haven't checked this in detail. There seems to be also RAM on the card. I will post a photo link later.

There is a application with two DSP Firmwares, one for GM and one for MT32.
MIDI sounds OK, but mostly without additional effects. So I would rate it like MIDI on a GUS, maybe even a bit less due to the relatively smaller Wavetable. There seem to be not many Instrument variations, if any.

MT32 mode is somewhat strange.
Monkey Island sounds awful.
Dune2 sounds better than using General Midi except for the MT32 based FX effects.

I will check what the files from the taiwanese mirror give.

I have this card boxed and might be able to create images on the diskettes if there's interest...

Thanks but the card works now. After I checked all the driver archives, I found out the following:

There are several versions of the card:
With 512 K compressed ROM and 1 MB compressed ROM (2x512K) from Orchid.
This can be jumpered on the card. (My card has 2 Orchid ROMs and no jumper for this)
Latest driver is 1.4 for DOS / Win3.1

Then later Innovision jumped in and did some new ROMs.
For the cards with the Innovision ROMs there is a whole new driver version (2.x) and also new DSP Firmwares.
The Innovision ROMs could be bought for ~$40.

So I guess sound quality can differ depending on the cards version you got.

What utility program do you use to transfer floppy "images" onto your floppy disks when you are making copies (to get the install software to recognize the disk as a "legitimate, original" install disk)?

Once you try retrogaming, you'll never go back...

No need for privacy here - its called diskdupe, or "dd" for short. Its a DOS program that copies 1.44" floppies sector-by-sector.

I have this one:

http://geryon.ru/orchid_sw32_512k.jpg

How to determine the card version? The jumper is at 512K and if I switch it to 1M, the PC won't start.

I have this one http://mail.lipsia.de/~enigma/neu/pics/orchid … SoundWave32.jpg it has the 821 ROMs.
I don't know the difference to your 810 ROMs. You can find some recordings here ftp://78.46.141.148/wavetable_comparison/

hi!
I grabbed a Soundwave some times ago and I decided to install it. I read the manuel: "DMA must be 1 and can't be changed". Nevertheless I see a jumper (J4) on mine (and yours) stating "DMA, 1,3". I think Elianda and I own the same version.

Is there someone who tried to change the DMA to 3? It would be very nice. Hence I could stick to my SB16 native settings which work along with the Orchid.

BTW: thanks for the drivers on your FTP server, Elianda

Hmm, just try. Maybe it reports then DMA must be 3 and can not be changed.

I tried and it failed: you have to stick with DMA 1.

The cards sounds just OK: better than a Soundblaster but doe not stand a chance against my Roland SCC1. Its main interest is to emulate both SB and General MIDI at the same time.

Well, it reached a score of 2.0 of 10 in Rich Heimlichs Wavetable comparison on 1995: https://retronn.de/ftp/docs/pc_hardware/wavet … es/Heimlich.txt
