If you want good 2D (and the following is particularly true for cards made after, say, 1999), the more bandwidth the card has, the better it will perform in 2D

He has a Voodoo3. That gets the job done for almost everything. I'd say buy another. 😁

Seconded! Voodoo 3 (especially PCI) is a very versatile card to have in the house. It's one of those cards you never can have enough from 😁

Well if you want a 2D card to pair with your voodoo 1 & 2, I'd go a Matrox Millenium G200A. That's what I personally went in my Voodoo 2 SLI rig but that was mainly because it was available at the same time as the Voodoo's and was fairly well regarded as one of the better 2D cards.

I had a look...you're right. I mean 10 for a 2meg S3? a couple years ago I literally GAVE a handful to a friend of mine so he could troubleshoot a broken board of his.
Maybe I should start selling my S3's and flood the market 😜

I'd say just get any PCI VGA card you can get cheap and has the drivers for the OS you're gonna use them in. Just buy a box of untested cards, those old PCI cards seemed to never die.

I still can't believe people are asking over €10 for an S3 Virge. I mean, 90% of all systems in the 1997 era had one of these, they are woefully common.
I have a -box- full of them, easy more then 15 or so. I haven't even bothered to count or test them 🤣!

Seconding the G200, compared to the S3 Trio I have the 2D quality is much better.

I'd pick a Voodoo3 over any Matrox card. Voodoo3's GUI speed and analog quality is similar to G400, but it's the better choice for 3D and DOS.

Otherwise I'd go for a NVIDIA card. From Riva TNT onward, NVIDIA really nailed just about everything. Most of the time the analog quality is good although obviously there are some really blurry cards out there. These cards have excellent compatibility with old D3D and OGL games. DOS is silly fast and has good compatibility too. GUI speed is as fast as can be.

He said he's looking for 2D cards to pair with his Voodoo 1 & 2... he's already got a Voodoo 3 😀

recoil: I don't know what its like in the UK, but over here if you go to the local dump you might find a couple of discarded PC's. By far the most common type of PC I find is old socket 7 type systems and they almost always have a PCI video card in them, often an S3. So, you could try your local dump, tip shop, or you might find one on the side of the road 😀 It also pays to ask computer shops, I asked our local shop for an ISA network card, they dug out a big box full of old parts, I walked away with 2 Sound Blaster Pros, an SB 16, and a couple of other odds and ends and it was about $10 for the lot 😀

Yeah I know. I was just thinking that G200 is not really an exciting choice overall. It's ok for GUI though.

Some form of GeForce would be a much better companion I think. As long as it's not one of the uber blurry ones that are out there. 😉 Better DOS compatibility and great OpenGL/D3D compatibility.
