That list looks very good, but I have three comments:

  • Sound Card: Gravis ULtrasound PNP/EXtreme, MT-32/CL-XX/SC-XX Roland
Since the board you're buying most likely will only have one ISA slot I suggest getting a PCI soundcard as well for 3D sound, Windows usage and Soundblaster DOS compatibility. The Vortex2 cards are recommended.

  • RAM: Kingston Technologies 512MB DDR SDRAM PC3200 Desktop Memory KVR400AK2/512R (might be upgraded to 1GB)
This RAM is DDR and won't fit this board. You need PC133 SDRAM and you can maximum install 256MB sticks, meaning you need 2x256 to get 512MB.

  • Monitor: LG's 16:9 LCD monitor
Make sure this has a 4:3 setting 😀

Got it. The ram is 512 (2*256MB) so I can add it without any complicit. The P3B-F Rev 1.04 that I stored is 2 ISA slots. I'll check that monitor has 4:3 support. I'll use some tweaks for increasing performance like 512MB RAM limit patch. For Voodoo 5500 AGP, how should I deal with it? It seems to bit overpriced.. Is it any recommended 5.25 FDD for me? Here are links for some products.

Is Platimax has IDE PSU cable? I need it to use on this board. I also like you to find a cable for Voodoo 5500 AGP GPU.

Thanks for giving useful info! So you mean I can use GUS with AWE 64 Gold/Roland or GUS with Vortex 2/Roland or GUS with Vortex 2 and AWE 64 Gold/Roland right? Can you help me to find Waldorf Microwave PC Synthesizer, Voodoo 5500 AGP and Platimax IDE cables on Ebay and Amazon?

P.S.
Is it (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Slot-1-CPU-Retention- … =item25772e6644) helpful with slot 1 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/161337407578)? Since I need Pentium 3 Socket 370 slot 1 retention module to install P3-S Tualatin 1.4Ghz on 370 slot 1 CPU card. Remember that you need a slotklet that supports FC-PGA, or in other words P3 Coppermines. You can't use a slotklet that only supports Socket 370. The one you linked to supports both which is the one you'll need.

You don't need to have slot 1 rentiention brackets, but it certainly makes it safer to have the slotklet installed. Most likely they are still attached to your motherboard.

Oh, I did not notice that slot retention brackets are just the tools for hardening slot 1 CPU cards and MOBOs are still have them. Thanks for giving useful fact that 370 PPGA/FC-PGA CARD SLOCKET Socket 370 Slot 1 adapter New on Card (http://www.ebay.com/itm/161337407578) fits for my rig 😊 🤣 . How about sound card? Is it possible to use 3 sound cards on this PC (Gravis Ultrasound PNP, AWE 64 Gold. Aureal Vortex 2/Santa Cruz)? 😕 😕

Note:
Are analogue audio and IDE cables for PSUs still available in the market? Since I wanna avoid import charges and shipping fees as possible as I can.
What is the best shipping option in the Ebay (include expedited one)?

Links for TEAC-FD55, 5.25 & 3.5 combo cable and Santa Cruz (Vortex 2 on Ebay are rare to search):

I don't see why a Vortex 2 wouldn't work alongside an AWE64/GUS. AWE64/GUS for pure DOS, Vortex 2 for Win98.

Diamond Monster Sound MX300 is another good Vortex 2 card.

How did you manage to use multiple sound card? I searched through the forums and found that I needed to use combo cables or mixer/synthesizer. However, it did not explain fully that I couldn't figure it out. Can you tell me your method please (include requirements for it)? Also, when I choose the drivers, which OS should I choose between DOS and Windows 98 SE for my rig (since my PC is DOS/Glide gaming rig)?

Can you give me drivers and patches for Gravis Ultrasound PNP and AWE 64 Gold and Diamond Monster Sound MX300 (OS: Win 98 SE)? I downloaded some drivers by myself except Diamond Monster Sound MX300 from VOGONS driver library but I'm not sure whether they are appropriate or not

Things that I have:
AWE64G.RAR (installation CD for AWE 64 Gold)
ULTRAPNP_CDiso.rar (installation CD for Gravis PNP)
GUS_PNP (floppy Diskette image for Gravis PNP)
sbw9xup (Driver for AWE 64 Gold)

Things that I don't have:
Patches for Gravis Ultrasound PNP like Pro Pats Light, additional RAM patch
Drivers for Diamond Monster MX300

Sites that I found:

http://www.vogonsdrivers.com/getfile.php?fileid=11
http://support.creative.com/downloads/welcome … erType=1#type_1
http://www.vogonsdrivers.com/getfile.php?fileid=9
http://gona.mactar.hu/GRAVIS/#PnP (Is it the site that I'm searching for?)

Note: How do you manage to allow your PC to use multiple sound card? Plz let me know so that I can do that.

This re-treads some of the information in this post - I referenced it when I set about to building a Win98 SE system. My son wanted to play Dungeon Keeper 2 but it kept crashing on my XP system no matter what I tried to do to stabilize it. Here's what I ended up going with. Basically for under $200, I was able to put together a *very* stable and very fast Windows 98 System. One tip when buying on eBay: look for hardware with the original driver CD. It will save alot of hassle.

$50
ASRock Motherboard Model ASRock P4VM8 AGP 8x ATA 133 Prescott800
Came with:
* Intel Pentium P4 HT at 3.0 GHz
* 768 MB Ram

$40
CORSAIR CX series CX500 500W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply

$20
BFG GeForce 6800GT OC 256MB DDR3 AGP 8x/4x

$12
Maxtor DiamondMax 10 200GB 7200RPM PATA133 3.5" Hard Drive (NOS)

$35
Corsair Carbide Series SPEC-01 Mid Tower

$12
Nondescript P-ATA/IDE optical drive

$10
3.5 floppy drive

$10
Optical PS/2 mouse (had a PS/2 keyboard handy)

Easily worth the money and gives me the chance to dig out my other older games.

Why PATA HDD/CD-drive/DVD-drive?
Late socket478 motherboards have at least 2 SATA ports and can use these ports in compatibility mode (so even DOS can't see the difference). Some motherboards can select ANY 4 PATA/SATA devices to emulate standard primary/secondary IDE controllers (you can use 3 PATA and 1 SATA device as the example).

By the way - I prefer WinME because a) the USB support, b) it supports WinXp boot manager "from a box", you can install WinXp to a logical partition then install WinME and have the dualboot system automatically.

Asus P4P800 SE/Pentium4 3.2E/2 Gb DDR400B,
Radeon HD3850 Agp (Sapphire), Catalyst 14.4 (XpProSp3).
Voodoo2 12 MB SLI, Win2k drivers 1.02.00 (XpProSp3).

I can see a reason for a PATA CD/DVD: analog audio. SATA drives do not have the analog audio connector so they can be pretty useless for CD-audio games. In Windows, if your sound card's drivers allow you to enable "digital playback" then its fine. Also, I find that Windows ME ships with WDM drivers for a lot of older sound cards (whereas Windows 98 came with VxD drivers), and WDM drivers are useless for OPL3 support in DOS games.

I've tried in 4 different computer systems, intel and amd, and -never- have been able to get win98se to install and function "normally" with a main system drive running on a SATA controller. SATA is much later than Win98se was, and for optimal compatibility I would just use a fast 7200 rpm IDE drive myself, and probably would I would recommend to everyone. Remember, running a Win98se machine isn't about speed, because Win98 hinders all hardware by nearly -60% performance.. it's about compatibility, and having it function at all without crashing.

Also.. Jymm, why did you dig up a over a year old thread for this? 😢 😵 You should of started a new one.

I also use SATA hard drives with Pentium 4 machines. Just got to pick the correct BIOS options, sometimes it's called legacy or compatibility vs. enhanced. For optical drive I stick with IDE, because of the analogue audio out as mentioned.

My MB also has Sata ports. I was looking for stability more than (super) speed. Plus the Maxtor was just handy courtesy of the junk computer store.
