IDK why, but I never knew about those back then. My old machines were so underutilized due to not having usable internet. Might try those for the lulz.

Finally got my PIII system a home and put it together. Next thing is to get 1GB of ram and an SB Live! Platinum with Live Drive, as well as an ASUS iPanel. I may eventually get a different MB, but I don't see much reason too. Still can't figure out what GPU to put in it. Maybe a VooDoo 3 and keep my my Dell XPS systems purely nvidia.

SB Live! Value

So awesome the case came with the right badges too!

Spent the past three nights straightening pins under a large magnifying glass on a pair of Northwood P4s... Got one to post but keep getting BSODs right away during winXP setup.. Progress has been made. Now I sleep.

I just did the same on a similar celeron. I used a sewing needle. Not too small. If you slide it along the bottom and kinda "pluck" the pins upwards you can get nice even rows. Wiggling them around like with a mech. pencil will stress the metal way too much.

Not a great day today, I went back outside to the shed where I'd stored all 4 of my 486 PCs. Even though they were wrapped up, I hadn't accounted for a disaster such as the shed roof falling apart and exposing it's contents to the elements.

All 4 systems are in a pretty bad way, rusted up. Most of the damage appears limited to the external casing and exposed Metal parts, but I haven't tested them all yet. 1 of them is a definite write off, at least as far as the PC case is concerned, another 2 may be ok once I've cleaned them up.

I've only gotten around to testing 1 of them so far, the least damaged of the 4 -

Dell Optiplex 425s/L (BIOS says it's an Optiplex 433s/L).
Intel 486SX @ 33MHz
28MB RAM
Did have a 1.6GB IDE Hard Drive with Windows NT 4 Workstation installed, but the drive is dead, so currently no HDD or OS.
Not tested it's IDE CD-Rom drive, but they're a dime a dozen so I'm not worried if it works or not. Floppy seems ok.
BIOS battery obviously dead & front LEDs are dead.
3Com Etherlink III 3C509B ISA Ethernet Card.

EDIT TO SAY: It stopped working. PSU and drives spin up, but no POST.

The other 3, not yet tested -

Dell Optiplex 433/LE, Intel 486SX 33MHz, 64MB RAM, 420MB & 820MB IDE Hard Drives. This is the one with the most severe damage to it's case, was probably the one closest to the shed floor. If it was working, it was previously dual booting Windows NT 4 Workstation & MS-DOS 6.22 with Windows for Workgroups 3.11. Also has a 3Com Etherlink III 3C509B ISA Ethernet Card. Also has a single speed tray loading CD-ROM drive, with it's own ISA controller card.

Generic Tower with the name "Intelec PC" on the front. No CPU installed, but it did previously have an Intel 486 DX4 100MHz (I have that in storage somewhere, but needs many pins straightening and needs me to find it's cooler). 32MB RAM, ESS 1688 ISA Sound Card & Cirrus Logic CL-GD5428 ISA Graphics Card. 1.6GB IDE HDD installed. Seems to have both 30-pin & 72-pin SIMMs, all slots currently full. Motherboard chips marked Winbond CL-GD5428.

Generic Desktop PC with the name "Total Peripherals". AMD 486SX 33MHz, 25MB RAM (according to my previously documented specs), Tseng Labs 1MB ISA Graphics Card. No HDD installed. Has an IDE CD-ROM and a 5.25 Floppy Drive (floppy not originally from this system, I salvaged that years ago from an old 8088). The 3.5 Floppy bay is empty, I was previously using it for the HDD. Motherboard chips marked SIS 85C4. This also has my ISA Hercules Monochrome Graphics Card installed, probably just for storage purposes.

So, anybody know something good to remove rust? Lol. I'm glad that I only stored 5 PCs in that shed, the rest are safely indoors. I'll probably end up having to strip most of them down for parts, shame.

Haha.. I went through the same process here basically, used a needle to bring them up and a pair of small tweezers to try to even out the rows. What a job, still no luck though.. totally unstable 😒

Finally got time to test my PAT54PV Socket 5 VLB motherboard.
$%28KGrHqV,!qMFGmj%28d0jwBRp9FkDNvw~~60_1.JPG

Seller sold it as tested and working (probably back in 2013 when it was first put up for sale), but when I received it, the battery had started to leak. So I desoldered it, connected the card with an ISA Mach64 and booted up. Problems encountered:

1. Speaker beep for RAM error. I removed two of the memory modules from bank 1 and tried again. It booted for the first time, but halted right after doing memory check.
2. After the first boot the board was completely dead. I rechecked all jumpers and the CPU. Also switched to some other known working RAM modules. None of that worked. I noticed there were some corrosion damage to one of the traces, so I took a small cable and held it in place over the damaged area. For some reason that was enough to make the board boot again, and after that it booted up every time.
3. Which got me into keyboard error. No matter what I did, I got keyboard error. Numlock didnt activate, completely dead. So I took everything apart and had a real look at the corrosion damage. I found it came from the data feed on the DIN 5 port. So I soldered on a new cable from the middle pin of the DIN 5 socket to the resistor to create a new connection, and when I powered it on again, it worked!

Didn't have an external battery laying around, so I took the one from my 386 (turned out it only had 1.7V left, so had to replace it anyway), plugged in a new battery and tested it. I can confirm the PAT54PV works with a 3V external battery, even though the manual recommends 6V.

You could maybe use Coca Cola to remove the rust. I've used it to take rust off guitar hardware before and it worked pretty good there. You will probably want to touch up the paint on the case though.

First of all, sorry for my poor english as usual 😀

Well, yesterday night i was quickly browsing through the forum, and i stumbled upon a post regarding the a600 memory expansion / rtc . The one with the badly damaged board due to a leaked battery.

Well i've completely forgotten that my a600 has a memory expansion, and i've never checked it because it's enclosure, the rf shielding,it's tightly soldered.Uh-Oh

Today's work: Memory expansion check! And , well , THE HORROR

1/3 of the board looks like a Van Gogh painting

With a little bit of panic , i decided to desolder the battery, scrub the nasty stuff and check the connections.
Used a brush, fine sanding paper, and a pointy dremel tip for the hard to reach parts

This is after 30 minutes of treatment. Luckily all tracks emerged from the crystals unscathed
I did not use vinegar or citric acid to neutralize that alkaline stuff(well i guess its basic), but i'll check it again to see if the corrosion is spreading or has stopped.

Added your regular 3v battery with battery holder and closed the rf shielding.

Whew. close call, but i strongly recommend to check / remove batteries from your unused devices all the time

Maybe beating a dead horse to try Windows 98 SE running on a HP nx8220 with a 915PM chipset, but have not given up yet. Just some drivers missing, but its only the ATI Mobility Radeon x600 (PCI-E) i care for. Having problems finding a driver for that and the Broadcom NetExtreme 5750a1m NIC. Tried a lot of drivers, but the device id isnt in the inf files.
HPs W2K softpacks for audio, bluetooth and the ich6 chipset were installed sucsessfully. Not sure about if bluetooth works correctly, but no yellow in device manager.

I needed more space in the room, so when I recieved 10 antistatic bags I ordered some time ago. I began to tear down two of my builds. I really need the space, like in REALLY need it. So untill I can get some shelves set up, I have my P-II-350 and my K6-II-500 in boxes. Cases are stored in another room. Funny enough. I have totally forgotten that I had AWE64-Values in those two machines. Wich is nice I guess. Well... Forgotten all about one G400 card too, as I thought that it ran a Rage128. When I saw that G400, I was all like "ohh yeah, now I remember... I sold the Rage128 last year". 🤣 Anyway....

The K6-II-500 was on an Asus P5A 1.04 and the P-II-350 was on an Asus P2B-S 1.02. Good boards in good builds, though lack of space requires me to place the hardware in boxes, and store the cases elsewere. Anyway... Never really use them at all.

They will be rebuild in the future, whenever I have the room/space for all computers at the same time.

Lol, this sounds very similar to me 😁. I've probably looked inside some of my rigs and into some boxes over 10 times already, because every time I forget what's inside and then after a while I start thinking "what was inside there again?". But it seems I ask myself the very same question every year, same story, I take a look inside "Ah wow I forgot that I even had that! 😁" I close her up, forget about it then one year later I see it and think "what was inside there again?" 😵
I also keep forgetting which parts I have, so unless I make lists or label them I'll just keep getting free surprises once in a while 🤣

128bit does that. A Radeon 8500 would be perfect for that system and totally contemporary.. If youll go 9600pro you may as sell stick in a 9800pro for maximum overkill 😁
