Tried to get some more network speed out of my WinME build, P4EE, 875P, Intel Pro 1000CT and C400 SSD. Before it did top out around 5-6 MB/s on my GbE home network when pushing data to it and when pulling data from it, 10-11 MB/s. I'm doing most of my cd-rom image archiving on that computer so some juiced up GbE MB/s over SMB would have been appreciated. After 4h and 30+ restarts it's now around 7-9 MB/s pushing data to it, and while it is better it was totally not worth the time. I tested with following options in combinations: RWIN Window, MTU (JUMBO FRAMES), Interrupt moderation rate, Flow Control rate. Out of these, only the interrupt moderation rate (off) gave some noticeable speed increase, 1-2 MB/s.

Well, at least I discovered that the switch I use at home is actually an managed switch and Windows ME does support jumbo frames but in the end, that windows 9x network stack is simply, shit.

speaking of keyboards I decided to retrobright this spare Compaq I've had sitting around. I forgot to take a picture of before but this picture is from a few months ago.

Before... it was QUITE yellow!

Compaq KB-9965 269513-001. Even though it is rubber dome, it's quite decent. The Canada NMB-003 writing means it's probably got NMB rubber domes.

Even has a metal backplate! Was surprised by this.

It's not a bad keyboard and is quite comfortable to type on. Doesn't feel mushy like many other rubber domes.

Some kind of a industrial chassis with ISA backplane, "famous" one - Acrosser IPC3SP.

Yep. Also mine has slim protective cover, as you may see. 😀

I have begun the process of salvaging data from my old laptops, that I am not using anymore.
A lot of data need to be backed up, as long back as somewere in 2010.

Must has tiny CRT!

🤣 I'm thinking the same thing, that would be an awesome piece to have around without taking up too much space.

Sup. I like computers. Are you a computer?

Today I installed Intel Pentium Overdrive 166 MHz MMX to replace the original 100 MHz stone. The performance upgrade has been visible. POD which I have owned over fifteen years but never played has smooth frame rate and Descent with 3Dfx patch got a huge bump in performance. I can even play Quake 2 now with tolerable fps, which is kinda fun. Carmageddon still works like ass in Glide, am I missing something or is it just horribly optimized? I have seen a Youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cb4sgUXluGk&t=4935s where it works nice on 133 MHz build so I know it gotta work.

Testing floppy drives is pretty frustrating when both your 'known good' drive and floppy turn out to be dead...

Changing to a different floppy and re-testing all the drives that failed first time showed much better results - 5 out of 8 working perfectly, 2 mechanically OK but not reading correctly (heads dirty?), just one completely gone round the bend, with the servo motor continuously chugging. Binned that, considering what to do with the other two (5 working is already more than I need, and the two iffy ones are bog-standard MItsumi drives like two of the working ones).

That's not a good pic but it was quite yellow before I did it. It's much better now.

Saw this neat ViewSonic PerfectSound 17GA multimedia monitor. It has built in multimedia speakers and RCA jacks on the back. If it weren't in such horrid condition and/or hadn't sat out in the rain for days/weeks I probably would have grabbed it. I highly doubt it would have worked having sat out that long though there was no visible water damage. The TV that was sitting ontop of it was completely filled with water so I know it had been there for some time. The VGA cable was also loose in the back in addition to the front damage. What a shame. I'll probably never see another like it.

Anyone here ever seen anything like this before? A CRT with built in speakers is a new one for me.

CRT's with speakers, were quite common in the Amiga days. Apple made a bunch of Mac CRT's for the PowerPC line in the mid-90's as well. On PC, they tried to make it populair in 1995/97 as well. Never quite caught on though.

Im having regrets about not grabbing it.

If I'm in town in the next couple of days (and its still there, and we dont have any more bad weather) I may very well grab it and see how it cleans up.

Was wondering what the jumper was for on my CGA graphics card in my XT build, as I can't seem to find documentation for the card (haven't really looked).

I suspected it would have something to do with the output signal and decided to try it. I was correct, it now outputs correctly to my LCD TV without needing a VCR as passthrough. It has solved the issue of the VCR making the image darker.

Fortune favors me. I'm heading into town tomorrow for an interview. I'm going to stealth by there and grab the monitor whIle I'm there.
