I really wanted to post a picture of Christopher Walken, instead I wrote this.

That Walken sketch is exactly what I was thinking of when I replied. 🤣

May I join the club ?

Yes! All you have to do is buy endless amounts of old computer hardware.

Been there, done that (still doing it) and going to buy the t-shirt once someone starts selling them . 😉

P.S. Christopher Walken is a living legend, IMHO . Long live Colonel Angus!

I've never met anyone who doesn't like Colonel Angus.

It'll be a sad scary day when you meet someone who doesn't love Colonel Angus.

A friend of mine (also into retro computers) sent me this at 7pm today.

It was laying in front of someone's yard, on the sidewalk - probably for the garbage men to pick up. Thought to myself - "nice - free 15 CRT. It's probably been out in the rain, and it's probably dead". People don't really throw these kinds of things away where I'm from. In any case I was working on my daily driver, fighting the AC belt tensioner pulley witch decided to get stuck - something the engine didn't appreciate so it tore the plastic part of the pulley right off, leaving me with a horrid screeching at idle and AC that works intermittently.

So after dealing with that carnage for a couple of hours, I took my kid and went home. On the way there I called up my mate and asked him for the precise location of that CRT - it was about 9 PM, almost dark outside, but I tough "eh - maybe it's still there". I thought for sure some kids picked it up to throw off the bridge just to hear a loud pop and get some cheap thrills. Luckily, the CRT was still there. So I pulled over, put it in my trunk and took it home.

Got home, my wife put the kid to sleep and I took a screwdriver to the CRT. I'm a bit weary of plugging in something that's been sitting on the side of the road for god knows how long, and might have been rained on. It was surprisingly clean on the inside, no obvious signs of damage (bulging caps, frayed/melted/cracked flyback transformer leads, blackened CRT neck) - maybe the previous owner had just tossed it. Put it back together and decided to fire it up:

Seems to work fine! Lucky me. Unfortunately I don't have any computer with a VGA connector at the apartment - most my stuff is at the garage, and the rest is in another city where I work during the weekdays, 98km away - but I'm fairly confident this little monitor works fine.

I'll test it properly tomorrow, adjust the brightness on the flyback and pair it with my 286 rig.

i like to think that is on a desk in a house, but nature has slowly grown up around it until only the crt is showing!

That's a pretty good find on the streets. I like the monitor. And yeah, it sure had some traveling ambitions. 😜

Kind of cheating but freecycle had an add for a "old Pentium 200MMX with 64Mb Ram from around 1997"
So the guy knew what he was selling as well, not some one just getting rid of some "old PC"
Looks like from post it notes stuck on the PSU he was playing around with NT4 on it in 2017

M/B: PC Chips M550 5.6
CPU: 200 MMX
RAM: 1 stick of 64MB SD Ram
Video: ATI Rage Pro
Sound: AWE64 CT4520
NIC: NetGear 10/100
DVD: Plextor PX-800A

Impressed I got a Plextor drive, not that I'll ever really use it now.
I'm happy about the ATI Rage Pro so can play around with ATI CIF
AWE is never a bad thing IMHO
I've always wanted a MMX and even kept a 233 MMX in the big hardware clear out of 2010 (that clear out we regret before getting into the hobby)
Really only thing I'm disappointed about is the case cover is missing but that was mentioned in the add so can't complain

I'm still having a hard time getting used to the fact that a S7 system with that vanilla setup is any more than some "old PC" but here we are.
Nice AT towers have become so rare that it's probably even worth replacing that cover somehow. Plexiglas? 😜
I know I could google it, but what's so special about that Plextor drive? Read that brand a lot in this context.

I know it doesn't matter and it's a good catch, but that non-gold AWE64 or other cards with that particular color scheme on the ports - is it just me, or do those look cheap and ugly as sin?

I like jumpers.

Got this today for free from office clearance.
It's Am5x86@133, 16mb ram, s3 vga, some Crystal sb clone card, Macase in great condition...
Also got a lot of DDR2 era computers, but that's boring and gonna end as e-waste anyway. 😀

I especially like the recessed power switch. I had a computer with a hard power switch (no soft power feature) and a protruding button with a hair trigger. I used to bump that thing all the time with my foot.

FYI one of these "drives" is fake 😄

Great case BTW, I have the same model. It's the archetypal mini tower 386/486 clone of the '90s.

Today's lucky find for my RAM collection. Probably going to use it in my overpowered XP build (C2D, X38 chipset, GTX280).
