QEMM is extremely useful as well. I've been using it by default in my build and i can't complain.

Another something I want to ask about, then: I've been hearing about QEMM a lot during the days of DOS games and DOS memory management. It was usually highly praised, but in the end it seems to me that it doesn't really do anything that cannot be achieved by the built-in EMM386. So where does it really shine?

It has nice Utilities which automatic optimize your Startup Files and load everything it can up.
But later MS came up with memmaker which does almost the same Job.

For a reto-gaming PC I'm not sure QEMM is very useful. You won't be loading behemoths like LANMAN or MSCLIENT, the default memory managers are more compatible, and even with SmartDrive and MSCDEX (as I had trouble with SHSUCDEX and UIDE) I can easily get over 600kb of free conventional memory without sacrificing the 64kb EMS page. Still a competent memory manager, though, and has some cool features.
