Hi!

I wonder if there are any cards which would support MPU-401 output through gameport when played dos-windowed games in win98se? I know that Sound Blaster PCI cards have legacy driver installed in win98, but setting-up games to play music with "General MIDI" or "MPU-401" just uses emulated wavetable synthesis and i don't want that.

For example i would want to:
1. setup DOOM (dos-windowed) in win98se
2. choose General MIDI on port 330
3. plug external synthesizer with gamport->midi cable

I'm just searching for a PCI or ISA card which would let me output midi through gameport in windows 98 BUT when playing dos games in dos-window, without all this general midi wavetable emulation crap. Any suggestions?

What most people do to use external MIDI gear through DOSBox is use a USB MIDI adapter.

But what you propose should also work.

Open DOSBox and type

mixer/listmidi and it well show you a list of available MIDI devices.

Ah ok 😀

So it must be a PCI card?

The Aureal Vortex 2 can do that. It has a driver setting to toggle between external port and wavetable header.

Well if you've got an ISA slot, than you are spoilt for choice 😀

Any SB16, 32 or 64 will do. As will many other cards, like Yamaha based like the Audician 32 Plus.
