Downloaded the GeForce 6 Drivers from Nvidia, and they install, but when I boot into 98 in normal mode, the screen flashes and goes blank. Installed a PCI video card and everything works fine.

The 6800XT works fine in the same machine under XP.

try going into BIOS and disabling AGP x4 and AGP fast write.

No option for fast write, but I changed AGP from 4x to 2x. Instead of a fast flicker, I got some scrambled color bars on the screen for a few seconds, but the screen still went black after that.

Board is an ASUS TUSL2-C. Should I give up and just use a PCI card?

don't own any other AGP cards that may be more compatible?

I had similar issues with a 6800 on a P III motherboard lately but then I was running XP and disabling those features in BIOS solved the problem.

Something like version 45.

I was doing well to find the one I found. Every other search just gave me some strange downloading service that wanted me to download their proprietary spyware-installing download manager.

And another obstacle: I can only boot into 98 safe mode now. But in safe mode, of course 98 won't recognize my USB drive, so I no longer have a way to get files onto the machine.

Not real sure. I put a PCI ATI Radeon 7000 in the machine. Will probably just ebay the AGP card, along with most of my other old stuff. Getting tired of how much time old hardware sucks up from my life.

Try all 8 drivers there exist in the whole universe for your card:
61.76 - http://http.download.nvidia.com/Windows/61.76 … n9x_english.exe
66.94 - http://http.download.nvidia.com/Windows/66.94 … n9x_english.exe
71.84 - http://http.download.nvidia.com/Windows/71.84 … n9x_english.exe
77.72 - http://http.download.nvidia.com/Windows/77.72 … n9x_english.exe
81.85 - http://http.download.nvidia.com/Windows/81.85 … n9x_english.exe
81.98 - http://http.download.nvidia.com/Windows/81.98 … n9x_english.exe
82.16 - Here
82.69 - http://nvidia.custhelp.com/ci/fattach/get/169 … eware_win9x.zip

If none of them work, then this card simply does not work on your motherboard.

Someone else had a recent thread about 6800XT being difficult. It uses the AGP PCIe bridge chip right?

That was me. The 7800 uses a PCI-E to AGP bridge chip, the 6800 is native AGP AFAIK but despite that I still had to turn fast write and x4 AGP off to get it working under XP where the 7800 failed even with these turned off. I used driver ver. 93.71 but again, this was XP.

did the generic VGA drivers at least get you to desktop?

My 6800LE, 6800GT and 6800 ultra all work fine in 98se, i THINK (not sure) the XT was a later card and indeed used a bridge chip.

You wrote well... 6800GS and XT were made some months later.
They use pci-agp bridge
