Hey guys,

I just binned an exploded GTX970. Already ordered a replacement (RX 480 x2) but for now, and the next 4 working days, I am limited to using a backup card. The only PCI-Express card I had kicking around is an ancient (but justified) X1950XTX. This thing has served me well for over 7 years. It's seen countless hours use over the years, but I just plucked it from the bottom drawer to see me through until Friday, and it worked like a charm!

EXCEPT for I am looking through the AMD website and cannot find a page for legacy drivers for Windows 7 64Bit which list this card under supported.

Can anyone help? What driver do I need to grab to use this X1950XTX under windows 7 64?

Thanks!

-Iris

Looking around the web, it appears X1950 series are not supported under Windows 7 64 at all. Which means I'll have to wait until Friday to watch any movies or play any games.

Does anyone know to confirm this is true? One way or the other? Is there a workaround or any working driver for the 1950XTX under Windows 7?

This is the Vista driver, but I can confirm it works in Windows 7 too. I have been using this since it was launched on my Radeon X800 Pro on Windows 7.

Do I need the suite? Or will the driver itself (36MB) be enough?

Thanks for the reply!

The WDM driver is ONLY for ViVo( Video in- Video out) functions on some Radeon cards, the full suite is always needed I think, and the small package is just an extra thing.

I'm in the same boat buddy. But i'm using an old 8800GT. Doing anything more complex than windows is just torture on this card. I have the crappy 256mb version and with my screen resolution of 2560x1600, it just destroys the card. But I can post on Vogons, so I got that going for me, which is nice.

My 480 was supposed to arrive saturday, but fedex in denver sucks, so it got "rescheduled" for monday.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

No actually the other night I was playing a game with the lights off and the window wide open. During these months of the year there are a million moths (especially with the garden being pretty unruly right now) and some inevitably make their way into the room. A particularly big moth kept harassing me and flapping all over my screen (attracted by the LED glow I suppose) and I kept shooing it away. Finally I blew on the moth really hard and it zoomed off to the right and a second or so later I heard a "THUNK" and a grinding noise ... and I realized the moth had flow into my open PC case and been sucked into a fan, and was currently being minced into 1000 pieces. 😐

It made a pretty loud noise and then everything went silent and I lost graphics (no signal). Turns out it was the graphics card fans which killed the moth. And it took the ultimate revenge.

So now I have to use this X1950XTX until my cards arrive, which should be Friday at the very latest (up to 5 working days).

I'm having a spate of bad luck lately. Just a few weeks ago my 27" Asus TN panel started to have a fuzzy picture when first turned on from cold. The more days that went by, the longer the fuzzy picture took to fade out, and then the screen displayed perfectly (until the next time I turned it off). One day, it just didn't lose the fuzzy picture. I read into it, apparently some caps must have failed either on the power board or the mainboard. I'm gonna try to fix it, but I don't even have a soldering iron. So that's on the list to do.

From a GTX970 + 27" 1920x1200 Asus screen to an X1950XTX and an 18.5" Acer. But I can't be sad. It could be worse. I could have been that moth...

Besides I'm currently playing through Return To Castle Wolfenstein and Warcraft III : Frozen Throne. They work fine. After these I'll try to squeeze Dawn Of War in there before the RX's come. Then it's time to buy a soldering iron. Also thinking about buying a 32" TV to use as a backup screen and to watch movies on (especially when the kids want to watch a Disney etc).

Vista drivers normally work for 7-8-10, it seems to have worked for you as expected.

but, windows 7 by default should have OK d3d drivers for you?
at least with my 9500PRO it had, it lacked OGL, but D3D was ok.

in any case, if you have an IGP, you could always use that if you have the 2500K listed there, that would be the HD 3000, but it's probably slower than the x1950 on most games anyway.

I had a similar failure with an LG monitor (but some old 17" LCD), replacing the caps on the power supply solved it, well, for a year at least.

The onboard VGA (IGP) was my first port of call, but for some reason it produced no display when I connected it up. Possibly disabled in the BIOS and I couldn't see a bios reset jumper / switch on this damn motherboard, so I dusted off my trusty X1950XTX. I love this old card, the only drawback being the fans are either at 30% or 70% (silent vs noisy) with no in-between. I can live it this though, it's only for a few days.

And yeah I would normally think to just buy a new screen but I'm still feeling the sting of the RX 480's purchase. In fact I told my girlfriend that I only bought ONE and that it only cost £149.99! I hope she doesn't read this...

I was puzzled as to what the fault on the monitor was and after a days research I managed to find the answer (and the solution, including youtube videos on how to do it). I figured for the sake of £15 (caps + soldering iron) and a few hours work, it was worth trying to save. For an old TN panel it's actually a great screen, I think it cost somewhere in the region of £330 when purchased 5 years ago. I also lost a 3.5 year old Viewsonic 24" e-IPS last year to some "blinking" problem, and figured it was dead. Luckily I didn't throw it out yet, it's in the spare room behind a pile of retro gear, so I am wondering now if I should open that up too and check the caps. Saving two monitors in one day would give me a warm feeling inside, and I could give it to someone as an upgrade. My girlfriends dad is using one of my throw-away 21.5" TN Samsung panels (1600x900) from years ago. He would probably appreciate the Viewsonic. Bigger cards in Solitaire! 😉
