I was told to post this here instead of the other forum, can't find a solution myself so I'm kinda desperate- AL is the entire reason I built this system.

Sound is an SB16, 8 megs of ram.

Alien Legacy installs, black screen with no output at start.
Is there a driver or something I'm missing?

Mostly want AL working, that's what I built this system for more or less- it runs too fast on my pentium 2.

also laffo doom 2 chugs like hell on this system.

I don't have experience with Alien Legacy although this game seems to be not so demanding and probably runs on a DX33 with ISA VGA card. For Syndicate Wars and Doom II it's another story. If I remember correctly Syndicate Wars runs happy with a Pentium 90 PCI. The regular/first version of Syndicate should run fine, however. Doom II will run a lot better with a VLB (Vesa Local Bus) VGA card; especially paired up with a DX2/66.

For mouse-support in DOS you need a mouse driver. Did you install one? Usually it's an executable that you can run without parameters but try a quick search on Google for 'dos mouse driver'.

Does Alien Legacy allows you to configure graphical modes? Perhaps you'd have to switch to a different resolution in order to get it working. It also might be a compatibility issue with the ATi VGA Wonder but that's hard to guess; you'd find out by getting a different VGA card.

I physically don't have a mouse is the problem, only serial ports here and I have none of those. No syndicate wars isn't that big of a deal.
Hmm you might be right, I'm not sure if I actually /have/ a different ISA video card though. I found the drivers and did a VESA test- it all seems fine.
E: I do not have any other ISA video cards ;-;

No Syndicate Wars is fine, but no AL is like, that ruins the entire purpose of this system.

Nothing special mentioned in the game's specs. Could be the VGA card. Maybe try changing your sound settings. Are you in DOS 5.x/6.x? Are you loading EMM386.EXE and HIMEM.SYS for 2.5+ MB of free XMS?

6.
Yes I am, and I tried REMing EMM386 too.
I tried changing the sound settings, using no sound, /and/ using a different sound card (I downgraded it to an ESS, gonna use my sole SB16 in a Pentium build once I get a board working.)

If you haven't yet, try a clean boot: http://smallvoid.com/article/bypass-step-thro … config-sys.html

Also, remove all non-essential hardware (sound, network cards, etc) to make it easier to eliminate variables.

Lastly, check if AL has a readme file in its directory. There may be late-breaking compatibility troubleshooting steps outlined for you to follow.

Gonna reinstall DOS-6 anyway because I hadn't set the date before doing so, so now everything looks weird. Files from 1970 ugh.
Would DOS 5 be better? It's a 1994 game so I highly doubt that would matter.

http://www.abandonia.com/files/extras/27676_al_man.pdf

here's a manual of the game there are sections for getting it running. noticed this in particular. If you look at the technical support section at the back there is also a way in the setup of the game to create a boot disk with the right memory config to run the game.

Start-up Problems
Even if you have the minimum 4 MB of RAM, Alien Legacy may not run correctly unless the RAM is configured (set up) correctly. You will need at least 570K (583,680 bytes) of free conventional memory and 2.5 MB of free extended memory (XMS).
If Alien Legacy does not start correctly, use the MS-DOS® MEM command to see if you need to free up some of your computer’s memory. From DOS, type MEM and press [Enter]. “Largest executable program size” is your free conventional memory; “bytes free (XMS)” is your extended memory. If you don’t have enough conventional memory, go to the Technical Support section in the back of this manual to find a way to set up your memory to run Alien Legacy. You can also consult your DOS and memory manager software documentation for detailed information about system memory.

It might be the cache that are too slow or you have too little of.
This is only guessing on my behalf, and I know that other users here can help you more than I can.

Yeah a DX33 is a bit little for Doom 2, but it /works/. Runs playable on low settings and a small viewport actually.
So that just makes Alien Legacy- a 2D game with a 386 as min-spec- not working even odder. I just reinstalled DOS 6 actually and it's still 100% hosed. No error, just a hard lock with a black screen.

I think it's normal for Doom 2 to chug on a 486DX33. 😀

Really strange yes..... I have seen a copy of the manual somewere.
(a place with pirated edition of the game, thus can not give you the adress)
I guess you have the manual at hand, and there is a section, dedicated
to problems with the game and solution suggestions in that manual.

There is a patch for Alien Legacy on this page. Maybe it will do something? Just grasping at straws. If your memory config looks good and the patch doesn't work id say you need to look at finding another VGA card.

Am I perhaps talking about the wrong game?
The one I saw the manual for, is the game in this google search:

https://www.google.dk/search?q=dos+game+alien … iw=1366&bih=631

The page in the manual I am talking about, is from and including page 78.
The section is called "technical support".
