So I'm thinking of finally buying a real PCI Voodoo. A V2 to be exact. I am planning to buy one of those NOS STB cards from Russia on eBay. Problem is they don't come with pass-through cables.

I was looking around and I found this. It's an extension cable meant for projectors with 2 females and 1 male. Would it work if I just used one of the female connectors? Has anyone else ever tried this? There is also the concern of image quality, I think the original cables that came with the cards were thicker and better shielded.

That would probably work, but having used some Voodoo cards like these, I've been pretty unimpressed with the VGA passthrough quality. 2D image quality is always going to suffer. I'm not sure how much the cable effects clarity in comparison to what the card itself does.

Honestly though, if I do another Voodoo setup, I'll probably opt for something like this instead:

Or this, to hook up multiple systems:

The tiny bit of extra work hitting the button to switch between your 2D and 3D card may be worth the massive improvement in quality outside of 3D accelerated games.

Now for some blitting from the back buffer.

2 females and... sounds good.

I use a regular VGA cable with a gender changer. I call it gender bender 🤣 .

I bought one of those a couple months ago, I figured they'd be long gone by now. Maybe time to buy another 🤣

I ended up buying the cheapest 'vga extension cable' I could find on amazon that looked like it had reasonably small connectors. It's 6ft long though, but hey I never see it anyways.

Honestly I noticed ZERO difference in 2D picture quality from the passthrough (out of a Diamond Viper V330 - RIVA128 card). I was very surprised, I thought for sure there would be at least some noise.

Search for "VGA port saver", buy one of the 6" - 12" ones.

Seems cheap... Perhaps too cheap.
A couple of clip on ferrit rings, might make it decent.

Don't eat stuff off a 15 year old never cleaned cpu cooler.

They put ferrite rings on cables to avoid RF/EMI problems, they won't improve picture quality.

Sometimes cheap cables have plastic blobs with no ferrites to make it look more professional.

I use the (I think original) pass cable that compared to the one seen on dvd decoder cards was much better on cable dimension and shield. But from what I remember the Voodoo1 result in more soft image compared to the Voodoo2. I don't know if it's the ramdac or better on board filters but I fel like the V2 improved it.

Yeah, I guess I should clarify my first post by saying that the original Voodoo cards seem to be much worse than later cards if you're trying to pass through at a somewhat decent resolution. I remember using 640x480 on the desktop in Windows 98 and that seemed totally normal... and then 800x600 seemed incredibly high res... and that was a couple years after the Voodoo was released, so most of them probably just weren't built to handle higher passthrough resolutions.

Now for some blitting from the back buffer.

Yeah, to be time correct we should think at what kind of crt monitors were around in 1996...Also we people maybe was less demanding on pixel perfect quality that today "require" quad hd resolution on 5" smartphone... 😵
