Looks like this is do-able ..having discovered the ISA slot pcb is plug in ..thus allowing the pre-made cables passage.
Some pics attched to show the various stages ..but of course nothing is yet fitted permanently..
just a mock up at this stage.

Cut a custom mount plate out of 7mm thick Teflon sheet..
Managed to mount the pcmcia interface unit below the hard 2.5 inch drive ..but not tried to re-fit the cage yet..
Just hope there is enough clearance.

Still working ok ..
..and yes there is room in there ..but barely.
I will have to make a longer IDE cable as the original no longer reaches..
I will have to cut an access slot in the lower half of the 5200 case to allow psmcia cards in and out ..
and somehow fold up the ribbons inside the ISA compartment to the rear ..if I ever want to be able to fit that sound card (assuming it works when I get it)

btw ..I hope you dont mind me adding this mod to your thread Ian ..
bit of a hijack ..but seemed relevant.

Hello Ian,

I recommend using the V5.30 Award patched version as that is the one everyone else is using at the moment and it is a slightly later version than the one in your machine so may have some bugfixes.

The EPROMS arrived this Thursday, so today I programmed the patched version of the V5.30 Award on the EPROM. Together with the FDD cable as described here in this forum, the T5200 now runs like a charm 😀 with GOTEK Floppy emulator and a CF-Card "HDD". Thank you a lot!! 😀 Attached find some pics of the machine.

As I sprayed and coated them plastic parts, the T5100/100 logo and the labels vanished, so I might have to print some waterslides to get them back on 😀

Nicely done, congrats! I actually had T5200, but the outside was in terrible condition. I prefered neat plastics of T3200SX. What paint / spray have you used on this one?

Thanks 😀 The case of my T5200 was in a bad condition as well, somehow oily and after cleaning (in the dishwasher) the color was of a very sad gray. So first I used benzine for cleaning the parts, then a plastic primer spray and (a day later) an acrylic paint spray on top. For the acrylic paint I used a semigloss graphite gray (RAL 7024).

I actually used this plastic primer spray: https://www.lackundfarbe24.de/de/Spraydosen-L … .-Nr.-213310000

For the acrylic paint spray I actually used: https://www.lackundfarbe24.de/de/Spraydosen-L … n-und-Glanzgrad ("halbglänzend")

Now it looks better than my T3200, though the T3200 still has the labels and the logo on it 😀

So ..it is working ..
my conversion of an 8bit ISA to 16 bit ..
For details of the riser I made ..see my 'a couple of retros..." thread ..
but this is it fitted.
There really isn't a lot of room in the 5200 ..and although making the riser was difficult ..cabling presented real challenges..
But it is all fitted and working ..though I haven't yet tried fitting a 16 bit sound card.
That said ..the ISA pcmcia card was already installed in win 95 ..and this is the short card which fits in the vertical riser.
I can see my network using the pcmcia Xircom card ..so fingers crossed all is good.

So ..looks like I need some help now Ian ..
I tried inserting the SB16 isa card ..in the genuine 16 bit slot.
Windows did not find it so obviously I figured I had done something wrong..
but when I pulled the pcmci card ( modded 16 bit slot) ..win 95 does see the sound card present in the system ..
So looks like both slots are working ..but it is either /or not both.
What can I do to accomodate both ..?
ideas welcomed.
I'm guessing there is either a conflict ..of hardware/resources.
Or maybe it is because I'm borrowing 36 connections from the original slot/part of the 16 bit bus ..and part of the 8 bit bus ??
I assumed these were all paralleled ..so I'm confused ?

Ok ..I think I sort of have my answer ...
Maybe _ because_ I used the 8 bit slot and simply extended it (effectively) by borrowing the data lines from the 16 bit extension of the original 16 bit slot ..my creation is not truely plug and play ??
In other words ..the 8 bit slot is not just a mirror of the lower half of the 16 bit slot ???
If this is true ..perhaps I can parallel up the 8 bit slot as well ..as all pins are exposed on the Toshibas plug in expansion slot..
am I on the right track ..
beats me..but this sure is confusing.
Only by plugging in either the sound card OR the pcmcia card directly into the TRUE 16 bit ISA can windows actually detect the cards.
anyone ?????

Had the riser out again ..and it looks like the gold pins are slightly staggered ..so dont quite line up ..
a bit of filing of the fibreglass pcb sort of fixed that ..
Checked again ..and it is pin for pin an exactclone of the 16 bit ISA socket.
As though there were 2 cards in one socket.
I still cannot get windows to accept 2 cards for plug n play ..but I did managed to manually install the sound card..
So now I have pcmcia and sound working ..though there ia an oddity with the Xircom ..which doesn't see the network on boot ..but popping the ethernet card out once windows has started ..and back in usually brings back the network.
So ..still convinced there is some issue sharing resources ..though nothing shows up as conflict.

Still all in all I would say this project has been a success ..though there are oddities

I'd forgotten just how much processing power is needed just to play an MP3 ..
Even winamp doesn't run ..
🤣
WAV files only then..

@REFCODES.ORG
Although I don't personally like to see a Gotek FDE inside one of these series (:P), I am still happy to see as many of these machines still in use/working condition/restored as possible. 😀

@Vipersan
So much trouble to have another 16bit ISA channel available, totally unnecessary and I totally approve!

Thanks for the encouragement JZ ..errr..I think ..
🤣
Just out of curiosity and since there is a vacant socket ..
would fitting a math co processor help things along ? now I'm running 95
Would this be a straight forward mod..and
what sort of chip would I be looking for ..?
Ian ..JZ ...Hamby ..
anyone ?

I have found some of these A80387dx-33 @ £15 each ..but In all honesty ..I have no idea if there would be any real advantage to fitting one ?
..or indeed IF the 486SXL even needs one or is compatible.

So ..
More analysis of the (conflict ?) situation reveals a sort of logic ..
16 bit sound card in the genuine slot..and pcmcia card in the pseudo 16 bit ISA slot.
pcmcia CD card fitted and pcmcia Xircom network card fitted.

From total power down ..ie mains off.
Boot > No login > no sound (sound card ignored or disabled) >CD drive visible
Cannot see network as I did not log in ..logical
Boot > Login > no sound (sound card ignored or disabled) > network visible > CD drive visible.
From this I conclude after mains full power down the ISA pcmcia card is installed ...the sound card is not

Re-boot/restart instead of power down.
no login > Sound card active > sound output > CD drive visible > network invisible (logical)
Re-boot/restart instead of power down.
login > Sound card active > sound output > CD drive visible > network visible (logical)

In conclusion ..If I want the pcmcia card and plugin cards recognised and active ...and I want sound as well ..
Then I have to perform a false start of win95
ie from Mains power off ..START > then ReSTART with login
I really dont understand this behaviour but at least it works..
perhaps someone has ideas based on the above logic.

There seems to be some kind of logic behind the behavior for sure. I bet that IanB can shed some light into proceedings, but it seems priority is given at some point to one slot upon bootup..
