Hi,
I can not run the ANY Voodoo3 PCI card installed on the PR440fx motherboard. Neither V3 3000 SDRAM nor V3 2000 SGRAM is working.
the computer freezes when windows is starting. I've checked with nt4 & xp. NT4 hangs on blue boot screen on ntoskernel inititialization and xp freezes with black cursor after xp boot logo is displayed-all just before loading to desktop. This is not a BSOD, just hangs.
Matrox, S3, V1 and Banshee works flawlessy.
All the cards are fully working with other hardware.
My config is:
dual PII OD (tested with 1cpu and ordinary ppro-same effect)
2x128MB EDO Reg ECC - tested with different modules, same thing
No IDE drives-controller disabled-just scsi hhd & cdrom-scsi cannot be disabled
Integrated LAN 82558 cannot be disabled
Bios latest 100d9I0

What could it be?

Do these Voodoo3 cards work OK in other computers?

Yes, all my V3s are tested with other mobos, they are absolutely in best working condiion.
Could anyone test V3 in their PR440FX?

I had two V2 working in an IBM PC Server 330 (dual PII 300, 256 EDO), that was in 2003 or 2004. Later I tried a V5 5500 PCI, it was also working fine. The motherboard had S3 Virge (or something like that onboard, with 1 MB, upgraded to 2 MB by adding two 512 kb chips (identical with those found on V2s). Unfortunately I can't try it soon, it's in a remote area,I still have it, but it's very difficult to me to get there. But, from time to time I go there to store other thing and to retrieve some older stuff when I need them, I'll try a V3 PCI then.

I've done some practical tests on my second PR440FX motherboard. I found the reason for the system hangs: this is an integrated network adapter i82558 conflict. NIC cannot be disabled, nor by jumpers nor by bios.
I've just found that integrated with NT4 cd 82857 driver works flawless with V3!! I allready know it's a driver conflict fault.
I've used ProSETII drivers dated 2003-08-27(latest) that caused crash.

All PR440FX I saw have 82557 chip. So maybe you had installed the wrong driver before?

Drivers cannot be wrong-network cards works with them. Although some of they(newest) are incompatible with 3Dfx drivers. Nothing new to hear that...
Try to launch Q3 smp with 3Dfx...

Yup, that's impossible to run V3 with PR440FX. I have even flashed V3s with other BIOS/FW and still the same:freeze on boot up. I have tweaked V3 BIOS with some PCI tweaks and disabled IRQ request; still the same-V3 wont run.
V3 and PR440FX i just no go tandem...

I've found that key thing to get V3 working with PR440FX/NT 4.0 is opengl32.dll from Service Pack 3-not higher.
Source:
https://jeffpar.github.io/kbarchive/kb/194/Q194985/
Now opengl works with SP6A & SP6SRP.

If the issue is a driver conflict, have you tried not installing any driver for the integrated network card?

Integrated network is a must for me, it can't be hardware disabled so it must work.
I found that e100b driver from NT4 Embedded cd is much newer and doesn't cause system to hang. So there is no need to install PROSet.
Also I've done some research and tweaked my original nt4 iso to slipstream sp6,sp6srp and some newer drivers and now V3 PCI is working.
Thanks to NT4Alive sp6 slipstream project installation of nt4 is in a one piece of cake.

But next problem was that opengl renderer interface wasn't available with V3 drivers, only Glide. I found this article: https://jeffpar.github.io/kbarchive/kb/194/Q194985/

I don't renamed 3dfxgl.dll to replace opengl32.dll to achieve full compatibility with eg: UT.

With use of opengl32.dll from sp3 now Opengl is fully available. Some "effects" are only visible with original nt4 3d screensavers but nothing worth to worry about. Maybe copying them from sp3 resolve that effects.

Sounds like you got it working now. Nice to see some NT4 builds and games being played on this OS.

My suggestion not to install the internal NIC driver was merely for troubleshooting purposes. If it came down to it, you could leave the internal NIC enabled (but not use it and no drivers installed) and use PCI ethernet card, perhaps a 1 gbit card.

Almost all the above problems resulted from insufficient current from the fortron 350W (32A@5V) power supply. The V5 5500 PCI works fine with the 460W (44A @ 5V) enermax, very old ATX 1.0 power supply. V5 has own molex power socket. V3 at higher clocks than 140MHz does not work, the motherboard is not able to provide adequate current to PCI slot. Only way to go is solder +5V molex power socket directly to the V3 card.
PR440FX with dual cpu/V3(or V5) at least 35A@5V power supply is needed.
