1)
Does anyone know what is the maximum size partition and type (FAT16 or NTFS) in which NT 3.51 can be installed on? For NT 4.0, it is 4 GB, but I am having trouble finding such information for NT 3.51. As I can with NT 4.0, when using NT 3.51, can I later resize the partition to 7.8 GB and still boot NT 3.51?

2)
What is the maximum amount of RAM NT 3.51 can install with? What about after the latest service pack? I recall that you cannot install NT 4.0, for example, with more than 2 GB installed. Once SP6a is installed, you can increase the RAM to 4 GB if you wish. I ask this because I have 128 MB installed, but during installation, the blue screen shows 68,xyz KB instead of 128 MB.

From what I can tell from the books I have here about the server version of 3.5 and my own experience of running it in a VM:

Processor: 386 minimum but 486 or better recommended
Memory: 16MB minimum 32MB or more recommended
Hard Drive: Surprisingly not mentioned anywhere specifically. When I was playing with it in a VM 2GB seemed more than enough.
Display: If it works with 3.1 then it should work with 3.5 as far as I can tell. The books just say VGA adapter.

Then you have the obvious of rodent, CD drive and so on.

I assume the workstation requirements are roughly the same, maybe get away with the lower end of the memory estimates? Depends on what you will be running on it really.

IIRC, 4GB is the maximum it can be installed on but it can run off of a larger partition. If using the SuperPack then likely even larger drives and FAT32 but not LBA48.

As for memory I always go low when installing old operating systems and bump it up later. For the most recent NT3.51 install I think I used 32mb for install and then after bumped it up to 256mb (likely chipset limitation of emulated hardware in pcem).

You can test all of the above easily with pcem and then once proven tailor your hardware to what you've tested in pcem.

So far, I've installed NT 3.51 with a 2 GB FAT16 partition and 64 MB of RAM. After installation, I tried increasing the RAM to 128 MB, but NT reads the ram as 66,xyz KB. My next move is to install the service pack (s). Seems like everything with this OS will be trial and error.

Interesting. I'm not sure why NT 3.51 only recognises up to 64 MB on my system, while Win95c sees all 128 MB.

Which graphic card are you using? I"m having a hard time getting the LAN working. I suspect my router doesn't like the OS.

TD-30 was built for NT3.51. It has Integrated matrox 2064SG- i think, it’s a first millennium type chip with sgram.
You can make use of vbe project VESA driver for hires desktop for nt 3.51.
I don’t remember for now which network chip is integrated but for sure it is 10Mbit.

Have You tried virtually run nt 3.51 and test it with more memory ?
I tried that before with virtualbox and i haven’t report any issues.

No, I don't have any virtual machines installed and don't care to mess with them. It won't fix my problem. The issue may be related to my hardware (NexGen) software combination. I've reinstalled NT 3.51 about 10 times now!

Do you know if I can use 7.8 GB NTFS start partitions with NT 3.51? That is one of my next tests, to resize my 4 GB partition using partition magic.

Are you able to run IE5? After installing IE5 for NT 3.51 and Win3.11, I receive the following error upon loading IE5:

PCTCPAPI083: 4.10 PC/TCP kernel and VxD not loaded.

Your application would be adversely affected.
DLL initialization failed.

I have my NIC setup (3Com 3C509B-TPO) using the NT 3.51 supplied Etherlink III ISA driver, but I am unable to view any other computer on the network. My XP machine is able to see that there is a NEXGEN-NT system on the network, but cannot view any shared folders. It spits back an error. So something isn't going as planned. I had installed IE5 to see if at least the internet was working, but IE5 won't even look for a website. Not sure if it is due to the NIC/router not getting along, or due to the above error.

Try re-installing the service pack.
I.E. 5 is not supported in WinNT 3.5.1 but it will work anyways.
I.E. 4 is supported.

I think your installation is screwed or drivers or service pack files. U see above clean installation with sp5, ie5 working, network working. Ethernet card is amd pcnet intergrated- native support by nt 3.51.

Have U installed TCP/IP stack with network setup? TCP/IP is optional function.
XP may don't want connect to NT Share because NT uses a LM1 authentication witout encryption. U should check xp gpedit.msc and allow unencrypted communication or set it to negotiation.

Oh, I ran into this problem before too. It turned out my WiFi setup was causing the problem.
I was able to use obtain an IP address and I could release and renew IP address fine.
I was able to browse the internet but not my home network.
I was using a TP-link WiFi extender connected to my PC via Ethernet.
Once I changed this router setup all was working again.

Try to power cycle you router and switches to refresh the IP address.

I'm not sure if the issue is a "NexGen thing" or a network problem. NexGen's only have the native 386 instruction set. Lots of issues needing work arounds - see my experience with NexGen and Win95c, http://www.cpu-world.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=31984&start=0

The installer says IE 5 16-bit is for Win 3.x and NT 3.5x. Is the installer mistaken?

I think TCP/IP is included as part of NT 3.51. It is not like Win 3.1 which requires me to install tcp32b.exe. Correct? I have installed the networking option with TCP/IP during NT 3.51 installation. I'm using the built-in Etherlink III ISA drivers. I tried the 3Com Etherlink III 3C509B drivers disk, but when opening Control Panel, the system hangs. I suspect it is somehow related to the 3COM icon which gets placed into the Control Panel.

In your case, the same IE5 error occured because the router wasn't allowing your NIC onboard? Seems odd that it would spit out error like this.

Yes, I need to power cycle the router. Was planning on doing this this evening.

OK, I think these are two separate problems, a) no network access from NIC, and b) IE5 woes.

I tried updating the firmware on my router, turning off all computers, and power cycling the router.

This is the view from XP, viewing computers in the same workgroup. You can see that the NT 3.51 system shows up (NEXGEN-NT), but it won't let me access it. On the Nexgen-NT machine, I've set the temp folder to shared, with permissions as everyone and my username, full access.

This is the view from NT 3.51, trying to view shared resources via the Windows Explorer. Nothing shows up, even if I manually type //opteron/temp , for example.

As for the IE issues, here is a screenshot of the error I receive upon system boot-up. This error only arose after installing IE5. I, again, receive this same error after trying to load IE5.

Here is the view of IE5 when opened. It looks to me like IE5 isn't fully loading, probably due to the error. There are no features except to close the program. Typing in a URL address doesn't do anything. I've tried turning on 486 instruction emulation (AlternateInstructions) in the BIOS, but the error remains. I've confirmed that if I boot up Windows 3.11, I can use IE 5 just fine on the same hardware.

In I.E. select the "Stop" button and then edit the settings so it open in "About:Blank" as the homepage.
The restart browser and try this website with is browser friendly http://www.macfixer.com

If that does not work then your WinNT 3.5.1 install has become corrupt.
Suggest you re-install.

Open DOS window
try these commands:
# arp -a
# netstat /a
# IPconfig /all
# IPconfig /release
# IPconfig /renew
#IPconfig /displaydns

Also test your network connection using another computer or laptop.

It is a fresh installation (12 hours old only), so I don't understand how it could be corrupt. The errors only started after installing IE5. I haven't run any programs on it, just setup the Matrox display drivers, network, SP5, and post-SP5 hotfixes. IE5 is a fresh install. I've uninstalled and reinstalled IE5 twice now. I've tried two different IE5 packages.

Pressing the stop button doesn't do anything. The menu options are still nil. Going to any website doesn't do anything. No error, no attempt, nothing.

I am pretty sure the network issues are related to the router. I had these issues with Win95c and fussed Netgear for months to get them to fix it. My warranty is now expired and they won't humour my requests anymore. This doesn't explain why IE5 appears dead. I will uninstall IE5 and try IE4.
