Hello,

I have an older motherboard which I was running a PIII 450Mhz (100FSB overclocked to 550). I recently bought an SL3XN (PIII 733MHz, 133FSB), thinking I could use it in this motherboard, but it gives me an error if I run at 733Mhz, 133FSB. I seem to have to run it at 550MHz.

Can I muck with the latency to get this working? I can run the CPU at 733MHz (133MHz FSB with PCI @ 1/4 (33MHz)), but the BIOS SoftMenu II gives an error: Unoperable CPU mode, and resets it to 266MHz (default).

I bought this new CPU planning to attempt overclock it to 1,000 MHz, but would happy at 733MHz! 😆

There is no way to overclock a Pentium3 733/fsb 133 to 1.000 Mhz. Here is a link to a series of articles that you may find helpful in understanding the issues involved.

Thanks for the link.

I figured out the missing piece to get it running at 733MHz. I originally neglected to adjust the latency. Setting a latency of 2 made the BIOS SoftMenu II happy and it’s running at 733MHz now, 133 FSB.

For the record, the guy I bought it from said it would never run at 133FSB /733MHz on my ABit BE6 because the motherboard only supported 66/100 FSB.

Regardless of what is said of what can and can’t be done, I will try to overclock it anyway, for science. Ultimately I’m happy with it running at 733MHz. The PCI bus is running at 33, and AGP 2/3.

I forgot just how much you could tweak via SoftMenu II on this motherboard, which is why I bought it back in the day. No dip switches on the board to deal with. 😀

It's possible to achieve on select few boards with i815EP/i815EPT chipset.

With Abit BE6, it's possible to achieve ~850Mhz relatively easy, i.e. 155Mhz FSB. After that, I wouldn't get your hopes up.

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.

Of course, meat bag!
Note: in reference to your avatar...

I wasn’t expecting to have a stable 1GHz overclock... just want to see how far I could push it. Again, I’m happy with 733MHz on this system.

At 733MHz with 133FSB, I have PCI running at 1/4 the FSB speed. If I went up to 155FSB I think some of the PCI cards might become unstable (1/4 is the smallest I can go in the BIOS settings). At least I remember that happening back in the day when I used to OC stuff on this board.

Oh yes, forgot about them...
