The Intel Chipset motherboard I am using has a Turbo button but it does not seem to work. So I just disable cache in bios and with SetMul utility.
With the AMD K5-100 running at 75mhz I have been able to slow down the CPU to fast 286 levels. Maybe 40mhz. I am not sure.
But it is definitely slower than a 386@33mhz.

On 16-bit code, 286 actually performs as well as 386 and faster than 386SX at the same clock speed.

Here is the benchmark score comparison.

AMD K6-100 running at 75mhz.
Disabling the caches dropped it down to a 386 at least.
What is a score of 7 in speedsys ?
What is a score of 56 in Topbench ?

I know that a 286@20mhz will score a 50 in topbench.

Some posted that a 386dx@40 scores a 9.2 in Speedsys test.

Intel Pentium-s 75
Speedsys score = 9.1
Topbench score = 61

So the AMD can actually run slower.
Maybe the AMD can run at high 286 speeds ?

You really need multiple benchmarks to get a good idea of how fast a slowed-down system is running. Different benchmarks tend to scale differently. It's frustrating because there's no absolute result that tells you your slowed down system is exactly like a ________. But it is what it is. According to my collected data, a speedsys of 7 and topbench of 56 roughly correlate to a 386SX-25, which I guess is similar to a 286-20.

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

233 MHz MMX and 64 MB EDO RAM is good.

Sound: SB16 or Yamaha YMF. Forget about AWE or Live.

Video: S3 Trio64.

Boom you’re done. That’s the standard setup. Can be built several times over with dime-a-dozen parts.

I think you are right about the SB16 because the AWE64 requires a Pentium 90 CPU.

The AWE64 is perfectly usable with less then a Pentium 90, it just works like an AWE32 (because the additional channels are software generated). But sound quality wise you are better off with a SB16 and a Dreamblaster or other wavetable added to the waveblaster header.

Sorry to say, but you are turning round in circles.
You started with 486 DX4/100, but then you concluded it is too slow.
Now you do something with an AMD K5 @ 75MHz and worry about how it could be slowed down.
Do you think the K5 75MHz is so much faster than a DX4 100MHz?

No, I am just trying to find the right hardware combination.
( CPU, Cache, RAM, Sound card, Video card ).
That will perform good at speeds of a 286/386/486 and Pentium CPU.

It’s like a car. I want as much “torque” as possible. I really don’t need acceleration ( speed ).
I just need the CPU processing power of the Pentium.

As for the sound card. I need it to play good music and midi files at slow speeds too so a Sound Blaster 16 with Yamaha OPL3 is going to be the way to go.

Maybe an AdLib 8 bit card too.

For video it will probably be the S3 trio64

I am only going to run DOS 6.22 and Win3x so 16-32mb of ram will be enough.

I found two more Socket 7 motherboards in my Garage. I know I have more but they are losts in the maze of boxes.

One is an ASUS TXP4 with Intel 430tx chipset.
The other am not sure what model it is but it has a VIA chipset.
Motherboard reads - P5M4-P

Which Motherboard would you choose out of these ?
I am building a Win95 computer.
I don't know if AGP is supported in Win95 ?
I think I want to use a motherboard that does not require additional drivers NOT included in Win95 install CD.
But NOT sure of Pros vs. Cons ?

So you only want to use hardware that was released way earlier than Win95? That's the only way you are not going to have to install drivers for the motherboard?

Why?

95 supports AGP.
I'd probably go with one of the VX chipset based motherboards. Your pretty well covered using intel.
Doubt much difference between your 2 options above and a Win95 build.

The middle board looks to have its COASt module installed but the bottom has a extra ISA slot.

So is this “ Soyo SY-5EHM v1.1 “ Motheboard fully compatible with Win95 ?

Manual link :
https://mbmanuals.retropc.se/manuals/107/m5eh20.pdf

The Manual reads the motherboard supports up to AGP 2x
And the Manual reads I need 4 drivers shown
In image below.
Where can I get these drivers ?

If there are drivers for it, then yes. You should be able to find that out pretty easily.

I thought the point was you didn't want to install drivers?

If that's no longer the case then you can find the busmaster and chipset drivers on Phils page, your after the top 2 downloads.

Okay, So I am going to go with one of these two motherboards because this is what I have on hand.
!) Acorp A5VX2 with 256kb cache. Supports EDO RAM, Intel VX chipset.
2) FIC PT-2006 with 512kb cache. Supports EDO RAM, Intel VX chipset

What CPU do you think I should use ?
Needs to be 200mhz max.
But I want to be able to down clock it too.

Maybe:
Pentium 133
Pentium 200 mmx
AMD K5
AMD K6
AMD K6-2

This driver CD or possibly this one might work for your Soyo motherboard. When inserted on Win95 OSR 2.1 that disc automatically detected my SY-5BT, displayed the manual and suggested which drivers to install.

I am pretty sure its an Intel 430tx chipset.

Unlikely, as the board appears to have an AGP slot, and the 430TX chipset doesn't support that.
