I'm looking into buying a Compaq LTE 5000 series. Does anyone know if screens are interchangeable throughout the range. More particularly, can I buy a 5100, 5200 .etc with an SVGA or XGA panel and put a 640x480 TFT from an LTE 5000 in its place? They're different sizes, but I see the smaller VGA panel has chunked bezel. Anyone tried this?

In case you don't know, the 5000 has a 640x480 TFT and ESS1688 audio that works in DOS. The machine does no scaling, so running 640x480 on the "better" screens results in borders.

EDIT: It can scale with Fn-T4

I have not tried it, but I have an LTE 5100 with the 800x600 screen at hand. In case you need any detailled photos, measurements etc., I'll be happy to help.

Actually I have just recently traded a Slot 1 mainboard for the 5100, which is in excellent, very clean overall condition and even came with the original power supply, bag and a 32MB RAM upgrade module. Only lacking the CD-ROM drive. So I spent the last two days fiddling around with it. 😄

I've swapped the screen in my 486, but it was just a different sized screen, not a different resolution.

I know I have one of the Pentiums, I'm pretty sure with an 800x600 screen, and it scales 320x200 stuff to be 640x480 (so there are some scaling artifacts).

Thanks folks. I went ahead and read through the service manual, and I think I probably can but can't find anything definitive as Compaq makes no reference to upgrading LCDs and indicates to use the exact FRU display as shipped. However, the displays are all physically the same housing and the display type is controlled by a set of jumpers on the CPU card. All the different model CPU boards are set up with the same jumper table which has settings for everything from the 640x480 passive to the XGA active panel. Same video controller on all three models. Same pretty much everything on the whole series, actually, but there's three system board types that apparently have tweaks to support different ranges of CPUs but otherwise share the same major chips.

I'm feeling pretty good about this.

I had no idea there were jumpers 😮

I might have to check mine out...whenever this quarantine ends...

Pretty sure I just have the 486 on me right now...not even sure where I put the extra parts for it.

This service manual is only for the Pentium LTEs, 5100 through 5400. I don't doubt the older LTE Elites are very different being a whole different, older generation if hardware.

Several folks have mentioned stretching the screen with Fn-T, but that does nothing on my LTE 5400. I have the 800x600 12.1" screen from the 5300, and a 5400 CPU board.

I suspect that I'm missing the hotkey support software, but I can't figure out what softpaq has that, for Windows 98. I've been through a bunch, and the only obvious thing that I seem to be missing is the Power Management softpaq. The recommended paqs for Windows 98 are listed here http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01126867, on page 21.

From that list, I am missing SP7726, as that is no longer present on HP's softpaq download site, for some reason.

Does anyone else have an idea?

Thanks!

I've done the swap for my LTE 5000. Pretty straightforward process. Just don't forget to change the jumper settings according to Compaq LTE 5000 Maintenance And Service Manual.
I've made a reference for your conveinience:

Table 1-5. Display Configuration Jumpers
===========================================================================
Display Type Jumper JP3 Jumper JP2 Jumper JP4

LTE 5000 10.4 in VGA CSTN 1-2 2-3 1-2
LTE 5000 10.4 in VGA CTFT 2-3 2-3 1-2
LTE 5000 11.3 in SVGA CSTN 1-2 2-3 2-3
LTE 5100 10.4 in SVGA CTFT 2-3 2-3 2-3
LTE 5200 10.4 in SVGA CTFT 2-3 2-3 2-3
LTE 5280 11.3 in SVGA CTFT 2-3 2-3 2-3
LTE 5300 12.1 in SVGA CTFT 2-3 2-3 2-3
LTE 5150 Rev. 4X 11.3 in SVGA CSTN 1-2 1-2 1-2
LTE 5150 Rev. 2X SVGA CSTN 2-3 1-2 1-2
LTE 5250 10.4 in SVGA CTFT 2-3 2-3 2-3
LTE 5380 12.1 in 1024 x 768 CTFT 2-3 1-2 1-2
LTE 5400 12.1 in 1024 x 768 CTFT 2-3 2-3 2-3
===========================================================================

P.S. I am now working on a drop-in solderless backlight CCFL to LED replacement kit. Would you be interested in one of those?

UPD. Oops! Sorry. I thought this tread was from 2021. Sorry for reviving a dead discussion.

Hi Volo, you swapped your screen from witch to witch versions?
I'm trying to swap the screen from a LTE 5100 to a LTE 5280 but don't know if i could swap this:
1 Display assembly, SVGA, CTFT, 11.3-inch (28.7 cm). Use with Models LTE 5280 SVGA
PART NUM: 224140-001
With this one:
1 Display assembly, SVGA, CTFT, 10.4-inch (26.4 cm). Use with Model LTE 5100 SVGA
PART NUM: 213548-001

Thanks folks!

Why would you bother? They both seem to be 800x600.

Screens should be all the same.
Jumper JP3 sets between CTFT and CSTN (i.e. active and passive matrix)
Jumpers JP2 and JP4 set screen model and resolution.
Do not touch JP1 - it resets BIOS.

Mine is 213547-001. Service manual states that LTE 5100 came with 213548-001 and 213549-001... which are somehow different.
Manual states that all three jumper should bridge 2-3 pins for your 213548-001 setup.
