Hello guys,

I have a Sony Vaio PCG-GRX560K that I have installed Windows 98 on. What would be the best option for connecting to my MT-32 or SC-55?

This laptop has:
-Parallel
-Serial
-USB
-PC Card

Options off the top of my head:
-Roland UM-One USB to MIDI (old version that has 98 drivers)
-Some sort of PC Card that has a joystick port?
-Parallel to MIDI? Parallel to joystick port? (I have a joystick to midi cable I use on another machine)

Parallel to joystick won't work unless the joystick port also supports MIDI.

For MT-32 games, you will need to run SOFTMPU.

If only using it through Windows 98, then I would say a Roland UM-One.

If using DOS, then probably a PCMCIA card that has DOS support.

You could also use a Parallel MIDI device.. For DOS though you will need drivers and then SOFTMPU on top of that unless I am mistaken... Probably one of the cheapest options though.

You can also use serial.... SOFTMPU does support serial.

I think that if you use serial to the SC-55 , the SC-55 will be able to send the MIDI data to the MT-32 through MIDI out . I tried to look through the Sc-55 MK2 manual , to confirm .
See http://cdn.roland.com/assets/media/pdf/SC-55MKII_OM.pdf

Page 14 of this manual should be used in classrooms as an example of how to not make signal flow diagrams . I don't know how it got through any kind of quality control at Roland.
It actually has signals without directional arrows to let you guess what way the signal flows . Sometimes it is obvious, sometimes not so much .
Also, the idea of drawing the ports outside the tone generator really helps to generate confusion .
However came up with this probably should have considered a different career or stayed in school longer .

EDIT: The SC-88 manual, in comparison, is much better, IMHO. It still has some ambiguities, though .

PCMCIA card PCJOY (for Dos/Windows), or PCJOY2 (for Windows) is good option, but hard to find

one month ago one was sold for just $42

I have only PCJOY2 version

I am planning to stick with 98 on this machine. Sounds like UM-One is probably the best bet.

Don't suppose anyone has gotten a UM-One-MK2 working under 98? I have one kicking around I used to use with DOSBox.

I am thinking probably would use the SC-55 much more on this machine. I have an older 486-66 machine for pure DOS that I currently have the MT-32 hooked up with a joystick-to-midi cable running SoftMPU.

You'll only get MIDI supprt under Win9x with those.
Also the PCJOY2 works fine in DOS with the original PCJOY driver.

As for the OP, serial is the easiest way to go i'd say.

Are you sure? I think I tried and the joystick did not work in Dos on PCJOY2

Edirol UM-4 (SuperMPU 64) should certainly work.

I can confirm that PCJOY2 works in DOS with the driver of PCJOY
