Dear all, I came across an NEC Versa 40EC, which appeared to be in perfect condition aside from the right monitor hinge being cracked, which is pretty common on these things. Anyways, I plugged it in and get no response whatsoever when I turn it on.

In terms of troubleshooting, I have tried using just AC power, I've replaced the cmos battery, taken out the old HDD and power on without it, and I have examined the board for any defects and did not notice anything while glancing over it. Is there anything I can do to it? Or is it just a faulty board at this point? Thanks.

Looks very similar to my Versa M/75... there should be an LCD indicator screen that shows symbols for battery charge, power, disk activity etc right? Do you see any activity on that screen?

Builds:

  • ECS FX-3000; 386DX-40@50; ET4000AX, ISA 1mb
  • Acer VI9; 486DLC-40; Mach32, VLB 2mb
  • Chicony CH-471A; CX486s-40; Mach32, VLB 2mb
  • Gateway 2000 P5-60; Pentium-60@66; S3 928, PCI 3mb
  • DTK PKM-0033S; AM5x86-133@160

Unfortunately I do not see any sort of indication whatsoever. The status bar is blank too.

Sounds like if the board isn't dead, it isn't getting any power. The status indicator on mine always shows a battery icon (with 1 bar flashing) when plugged in, even when turned off. I'd first suspect the power adapter. If you have access to a multimeter and probes, you might be able to probe into the power connector that is coming out of the power brick. There should be a diagram on the bottom side of the power brick that shows the pinout of the four power pins.

I appreciate you getting back to me. So I checked the power adapter with a voltage meter and it shows that a current is running through the adapter; however, I do not have a multimeter to check if it's the right voltages. Would it be worth checking or is it safe to say it's dead? Thanks.

Yeah no problem man. The voltages in old power supplies can drift, so correct voltage is pretty important. You might be better off getting a replacement power adapter off Ebay if you don't have access to a multimeter (just to be safe).

Does your power adapter have model no. OP-520-4401? There are new ones for pretty decent prices on Ebay.

Yeah my model is that one, and fun y enough that is where I got this one from. I'll look more into either getting a multimeter or getting another adapter to test it out. Are there any other models that I could look at or should I get that same model?

I see, so your power adapter isn't original... I just checked my M/75 and turns out it uses an OP-520-4701, not the OP-520-4401. Turns out they are not the same; the two power adapters are 13V and 13.5V respectively. My laptop also has "for use with OP-520-4701" and "13V" stamped on the bottom. Which power supply model does your 40EC specify on the bottom? You should definitely get a 4701 if that's the one specified.
