I'm trying different Emulated DosBox Sounds for The Secret Of Monkey Island

Adlib had Integrated Chip Yamaha YM3812...FM Synthesizers 8 bit mono sound

Here's an example...The sound is really Good...

Then I Tried Game Blaster..

Here's and example...The sound is Awful...Why? no Yamaha Chip (basically No Fm Synth)

Yes. Maybe not the map part. But stereo makes CMS sound nice.

It is not meant to be perfect. It is a pixelated VGA game after all.

Love the main tune (on any hw) or the LeChuck.

Check the real hw - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fr-84mjV3CI.

Well, CMS is more limited than Adlib, therefore it's more difficult to compose a good soundtrack for CMS.
My favourite pieces of CMS music are those from Silpheed and Times of Lore, not Monkey Island.

Square waves vs Sine waves. Most people prefer sine waves, so do I, it's no wonder CMS died, but at the same time I appreciate when CMS is used properly and sounds good like in the examples above or 'Don't go Alone' as another example.

One thing to consider is that creative didn't document some modes of the CMS chips which were available letting you change the envelope. Look for the Phillips SAA1099's datasheets for more infos.

I think this is a better demo of what the CMS card can do : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgtKnwtbsac (and it's just "half a CMS" !)

I love the SAA1099 sound. It’s squarewave and limited, but it’s really retro!

Here's more examples if you want to hear them 😀 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpDKrdqYDbM

A project I had in mind for a while was to create the "definitive" tracker for Sound blaster 1.x and 2.0.

Basically it'd let you use, CMS, OPL2 and DSP simultaneously !
There's really nothing that seems to prevent you from doing that with these cards, so I wondered how it'd sound like !

Zone 66 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnbrosPkq_M) is the only game I know that uses both OPL and DSP for music, and it sounds awesome, so a trio of sound sources may even sound better 😁
(And also for game devs it could let you create music using the DSP and OPL2 and some CMS voices and then use the rest of CMS voices as easily programmable stereo sound FX channels)

DSP for drums makes sense. A good tracker for CMS would be cool.
A tandy tracker is on its way. Now one for the SAA1099...

thank you all Guys
I'm an amateur and i'm new of this WORLD...

Is DosBox a good way to recording Audio?
At the moment,I'm capturing Audio with DosBox..
I get .WAV file at 1411 kbs 44. khz sample rate
I heard about OBS/MUNT , but it's too complicated for me compared to Dosbox
here's a scan of the audio spectrometer

It's a scan of Monkey Island VGA floppy DOS Adlib main theme

No, DOSBox' emulated sound and especially the CMS sounds off.

I have by no means started such a project yet (I've just experimented a little before) and I've never written any sound related stuff as of yet so I may struggle doing that, but that's definitely on my "to do" list, unless someone else wants to do this before me x).

But to me this'd be more than a simple "CMS tracker", it'd be a "Sound Blaster" tracker (although you could still only write for CMS through this, but the idea is to make a better use of the sound blaster overall).

Yes it's not good for this. At least not if you want accurate recordings compared to what it's supposed to sound like.

I'm a simple person. Game blaster sometimes makes my ears bleed with its peircing tones. Adlib doesn't 😉

Jokes aside. It's an interesting peice of kit and sounds okay in some games (but horribly in others). I'd never take it over OPL though.

Dos Box is not Good for audio recording?

how to record Videogames music in good quality?
I'm not going to buying real retro-hardware and configuring a 486 IBM
What good options do I have ?what do you recommend?

I have no idea, I'm not really interested by emulators ... Maybe PCem or its fork 86 box make a better job ?
