i got one of these Intel Desktop Board SE440BX-2
and it came with the yamaha chip. Is it good for DOS gaming? or it supports only for windows98?

I read that this board support pentium2 and pentium3 CPUs, but in order for it to support many pentium3 cpus you must not flash its bios to latest versions.
I wanted to know what is the best bios version that supports a higher speed Pentium3 CPUs.

With the Yamaha XG chip and no switches/jumperless ? Yes there is a quirk where some later BIOS did not support certain P3's.
If you are going to do DOS gaming you do not want a fast P3 but that Yamaha chip is supported under DOS for OPL3 afaik.

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun

i have a Intel SE440BX-2
according to that website http://nylan.info/SE440BX2/ , my part number is 720938-211 and its not compatible with pentium3 CPUs higher than 600mhz.
when you install a higher cpu it will give a boot error asking to use a lower speed CPU.

i find that odd, because the cpu message limit was implemented after bios version_13 , and if you have that firmware it might be possible to use higher speed CPUs
but accorting to that website http://nylan.info/SE440BX2/ only specific motherboard versions are capable of using higher speed CPUs.
