I am currently stuck on whats the best processor for the abit Fatal1ty AN9 32X AM2 motherboard.

It says (BIOS: m601b19.zip) ID:19 Update CPU Micro code to support Athlon 4X50 series and Sempron X2 CPU.
http://abit.ws/page/en/motherboard/motherboar … &pPRODINFO=BIOS

What in the heck is a Athlon 4x50?

I have a AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 2.0GHZ Socket AM2 Processor in this motherboard ATM. I am also on the REV 14 Bios however the computer has no idea what processor i'm running ATM.

I am also kinda freaked out about updating the bios as the instructions on the abit website are missing the photos.

AM2 means you can use up to Phenom II, use X2 or X4 but this being DDR2 cripples you to 8GB but perfect for XP with 4GB.

Okay pentiumspeed I have a (AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition) here. It's says it's an AM3 CPU. My motherboard is AM2 only. Not AM2+ so this is throwing me a bit. How could a AM3 CPU work in a AM2 only board?

AM3 CPUs support both DDR2 and DDR3 and they can work on AM2 boards provided there is BIOS support.

Socket AM3 processors are able to run on Socket AM2 and AM2+ motherboards with appropriate bios updates, but not vice versa. AM3 processors have a new memory controller supporting both DDR2 and DDR3 SDRAM, allowing backwards compatibility with AM2 and AM2+ motherboards. Since AM2 and AM2+ processors lack the new memory controller, they will not work on AM3 motherboards.

Yes, that correct, I had phenom II x2 on am2 motherboard at one point. No problems.

Also, if you want 16GB on DDR2 (which what AM2 through AM3 processors are all onboard memory controller are, including ECC support, verified by me), look for AMD supported DDR2-800 4GB modules. Does work, but the motherboard I had was microatx asus based AMD 785G chipset died. Later research revealed that 785G had high failure rate. So I'm waiting for time to purchase board with reliable chipset and DDR2 to rebuild my oddball DDR2 16GB machine.

What chipset do you recommend for AMD chipset using AM2 or AM3 with DDR2 board? one of these FX type?

What in the heck is a Athlon 4x50?

Probably means the Athlon 64 X2 4050, 4450, 4850 lower power versions.

That page doesn't say anything about Phenom support, does it? On AM2 boards that support Phenom 1, some Phenom II CPUs will usually work because of how close they are (even if they aren't officially supported) but if it doesn't support Phenom 1, then Phenom II has no chance. (Of course, boards with only DDR3 will support Phenom II but not Phenom 1, but that is a different thing)

Also, some Phenom II CPUs require dual power planes and will boot at only 800MHz in socket AM2. Athlon II X2 doesn't need dual power planes.

Nope not a word about Phenom. Even the CPU table doesn't say a thing. I don't even think they were released by the time abit went belly up.

Thanks!

Abit, MSI and many other vendors had never implemented Phenom support on their Nforce 5 series motherboards. You're stuck with Athlon 64 X2 6400+ as best possible option.

I don't even think they were released by the time abit went belly up.

They were released when company was still alive. Last boards which Abit designed were based on X58 chipset, although they didn't showed up in retail, but some are there in the wild. Apparently they've also made X48 and P45 boards, but in very low quantity and possibly very raw BIOS.

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.
