Which PCI Graphics Card For Socket 7 430tx/hx Builds?

I’m now using a radeon 7000 in it after having many issues with other cards under windows 9x/ME
Any suggestions on a faster (the fastest card) that I could use? I’m keeping an eye out for a radeon 7500/9100
Curious if anyone has gotten a radeon x700 working on a adapter.

x700 , x600 and x300 cards are all quite cheap (20 US$ price range). Assuming those would work through a third party PCI to PCI Express bridge, I wouldn't be surprised if even an x300 was bottlenecked enough by your your setup to make it practically indistinguishable from its higher-end brethren, from a performance point of view .

I found a low profile x600 for like 7 bucks 🤣. Be here in a week or so. 😀

it’s odd that it didn’t work.. I was able to program the correct registers it seems but no post. I’m wondering if the outputs need programmed also or something? Thoughts?

Woohoo!!! I-ram and audigy 2 zs!!!

Okay, what benchmarks should I run?

Seems like sparing a idea for a faster graphics card I’m about done with the build...?

I’d like to get the x600 working on the adapter but I think it’s a bios issue? If anyone has thoughts lemme know.

Ya might need something older. Something like a fx 5200 pci would be overkill for a P1.

Main pc: Asus ROG 17. R9 5900HX, RTX 3070m, 16gb ddr4 3200, 1tb NVME.
Retro PC: Soyo P4S Dragon, 3gb ddr 266, 120gb Maxtor, Geforce Fx 5950 Ultra, SB Live! 5.1

I have a 5500 on the dual pentium. But it doesn’t work on this board. It says 5200 on the chip

It’s a k6 III+ at 450mhz

There was a definite difference going from a radeon 7000 to a 7500

I’m trying to get the iram set up in windows 7 right now, then the zs. After that win ME but something is causing 7 to crash when screen saver starts. It seems to happen when I install some pci cards like a mpeg decoder or this audigy I’m guessing. Need to do more testing.

Haven’t had much time to work on this.

I benchmarked the I ram it’s getting 80 something mb/sec. so actually slower than my ssd 🤷‍♂️

But good for page file. I have ME and 7 page/swap file on it now.

Next up is figuring out why 7 is crashing on screensaver. And finding a audigy 2 zs driver for 7 and ME

Once that’s all working I can run some 3d mark.

But I’ve been kinda busy lately, so may be a while before I get to it.

Those seven around the CPU socket look like suspect 'cheap' capacitors on the board from the pattern on their tops. Have you considered recapping the board with quality new electrolytic caps? May make all the difference for you in your quest.

the failure to reach 83 mhz seems more related to the async setting than the actual clock speed because I also tried the 75 mhz async setting which works on non async neither of the async settings worked when programming the pins manually but I was able to program a non async setting at the pins which was not achievable by jumper as a prof of concept to verify I was on the right track, whatever the problem is, it seems it is related to this board not being able to run in async settings.

With and without usb 2.0 card.

Is there a specific usb card that I should buy?

NEC based ones are the ones that I have heard the best things about .

It is also not the first time that I read about USB 2.0 cards being installed causing a slowdown in an older machine .

EDIT: Try disabling the card in device manager instead of removing it. If performance improves, that could be a workaround .

Whoa. My TXP4 system scores 1,976 on 2001. Fifty more MHz, but mostly a much lighter software load (Win98, ESS ISA sound card, Quadro NVS 280).

this run was done on windows ME on a radeon 7500 and k63+ at 450mhz something else aside from the usb card must be messed up? maybe the audigy 2 being weird? I used default 3dmark settings

this is a NEC card what else should I try?

I'm not sure how to disable under device manager in ME I only see uninstall.

looking at the specs it seems that my radeon should be faster than your quadro card based on the 5500 chipset?

Ah, a Direct X 7 card really negatively affects that score (the NVS 280 is Direct X 8 ). For a more apples to apples comparison 3D Mark 99 and 2000. This system's 3D mark 2000 score is typically around 2,600 3D 99 is about the same.
The Audigy's driver overhead will also cause a performance hit, especially compared to a no frills ISA card like the ESS 1868.

that surprises me that the audigy isn't the best I thought their whole deal was cpu offloading? also there seems to be no sound during the benchmark anyway is there supposed to be? sound works otherwise...

USB 2.0 cards can indeed lower the performance of K6 systems.

See here: Re: Slow AMD K6-2+ 550 MHz performance?

is there a 2.0 or 3.0 card that will work better or should I downgrade to 1.1? or none at all and use a hub off onboard usb? I'll check out the thread one sec.

Edit: yeah I remembered that thread is why I thought to try it.

I tried disabling L2 here is what happened:

Gonna run again with L2 enabled just to confirm.
