Hi,

I recently got a couple Toshiba Portege 3110CT laptops - one needed a new hard drive and that machine is running absolutely fine, and the other had an almost blank drive that needed wiping and Windows 98 reinstalling. This second one worked for a while, but at one point during loading software I left it alone for a couple hours then came back to it and it was kind of beeping/clicking from the speaker and the screen was corrupt. I turned it off and on again but now I just get a blank screen.

I don't even get the BIOS Toshiba logo and the backlight doesn't turn on. I get no beeps or anything. I have noticed though through chance then trial and error that if I hold down F12 and power it on, the screen stays black but the backlight comes on! So it's not quite 100% dead, just about 99.99% dead 😀

Any tips? I've tried with no HDD or extra RAM connected and still nothing. I've left it alone for a few days and still no different.

Cheers,
Steve

check list i go through.
Check ram,
1. Run memtest86 if it works but has problems.
2. if it doesn't work change the ram.
3. run memtest86

4. Check HDD for hardware failure.
5. Inspect HDD for any clicking noises or hardware initialization failures (slow to detect)
6. Run HDD diagnostics

7. Check Video card for failures, run graphics benchmarks.

8. Check Monitor / LCD for failures, plug in external monitor or swap displays.

9. Physically inspect motherboard or system board for blown caps or other noticible things

10. Change battery

11. Most of the time it is the 1st issue the RAM is bad.
