Now that my serial mouse is working I would like to install an IDE CD drive to use with DOS. Right now i'm using a parallel port Backpack CD drive that works but is slower than molasses.

The only IDE CD drive I have is a XP-era LG one. Is there a generic DOS driver for CD drives?

You basically require two drivers.
One that comes with DOS (there are alternatives out there) called MSCDEX.EXE and the device driver for the CD-ROM drive itself. I prefer the one called VIDE-CDD.SYS, but the one that comes with the Windows 98 startup disk is called OAKCDROM.SYS.

You can take the ones from the Windows 98 startup disk or download the one from Philscomputerlab.

You load MSCDEX.EXE in your Autoexec.bat file and the CD-ROM device driver in your Config.sys file.
