Hi, please, can someone help me? I cannot manage to make this combination to work. Does anybody know why this AMD 486 with WB cache doesn't work with this MBO (v1.0)? Is there somewhere new BIOS for Venturis 466? I cannot find any, and the MBO works perfect with Intel 486-50MHz. Thanks in advance!

hare you configuring the jumpers in the correct way ? the two cpus are not a direct replacement.

Hi, thanks for response. Yes, i tried both jumper configurations (AMD DX, DX2 and others), i set FSB to 33MHz from 25 (for intel dx50). I even tried to remove external cache chips (don't ask me why 😀 ), but nothing worked. I searched 3 days for some BIOS for this mbo, but i didn't find any. There are manuals for this machines, and manual says that AMD 66 is supported, but it doesn't says anything about 66 with WB cache (MBO version 2.0 have jumper for WT or WB cache). I cannot find CPU support list for this machine, nothing, just manual.

Welcome to VOGONS 😀

Only the v2.x BIOS versions seem to memtion AMD support in their notes...

AMDX2 25 = 450d2
AMDX2 33 = 466d2

AMDX4-PLUS 25 = 475d4 (WB)
AMDX4-PLUS 33 = 4100d4 (WB)

You can find these BIOS versions (and other downloads for the Venturis 4xxx family) here

Those BIOS files are exe files, i need to install DOS to update, or i can update BIOS from "MSDOS formatted" floppy? Thanks in advance.

Probably going to need a proper DOS install either way.

The file(s) you downloaded from the link are actually self-extracting bootable floppy images using a really old DOS app. Once the app has written the floppy image you can either continue to use it or you can write the contents to hard disk - either way there are still a couple of steps to complete...

...one of the files in the image is a ZIP which will need extracted (they also supply a copy of PKUNZIP)

...there's an INSTALL batch file to run which checks both for the supplied language option and also which TRIO graphics option is present. It then writes a bootable CRISIS recovery floppy in the event that the BIOS upgrade fails and also finalises the UPGRADE directory (which contains the PHLASH flash app) by copying the VENTURIS.ROM file to it (also on the recovery floppy)

...you then change to the UPGRADE directory and run PHLASH

There are a number of README.TXT files supplied to check as well - let us know if you get stuck along the way.

😀 Thanks a lot, i was hoping that i will do this quickly 😀
I tried to run from floppy, but of course, it tells me that a drive is read only..... I tried to find "smaller" disk to install DOS 6.22, but i couldn't find any (min 40GB but it cannot be recognized), so i will wait for SD to IDE card i ordered before. I have 2GB SD card, and i hope this will do. Thanks a lot, You all made me a "happy boy" again. I already have working 386 (AMD SX 33), and "Pentium I" (AMD K5 133), now i only wait for CF and SD cards to arrive, and this 486 will be done. For 286 (of course - AMD 10MHz 😀 ) i need ISA HDD and Floppy controller, "Pentium II" is almost done, i need one super socket 7 MBO for AMD K6-3 500, and then, my collection of AMD history will be done. I have 50 AMD CPUs Socket A, and few MBO, so that won't be a problem - only problem will be place where all of this will be exposed 😀
Thanks a lot, if i'm stuck again, i know where to find geniuses to help me.

Hi,
today i received my sd to ide controller, so i install DOS on my Venturis, update the BIOS to 2.04, and - NOTHING! Intel 50 is still running ok, but the MBO doesn't recognize AMD 66V16BGC. I tried on both jumper settings, 33MHz FSB (i even tried 25 and 40), but no luck. Do You probably know, are there any CPU support list for this machine? I want to buy AMD 100 with WB, but there are 3 models (DX4-100SV8B, X4-100V16BGC and DX4-100SV16BGI), and if i buy again model that doesn't work with this MBO, i will be very sad.
Thanks in advance

The only cpu support lists seem to be either what's listed the BIOS txt files (above), or what appears in the Service Maintenance Manual

Perhaps only the v2.0 main logic board supports AMD cpus with WB - possibly bourne out by the separate v1.x & v2.x BIOS updates

we would like a photo of the motherboard 😀

Here is the picture with jumper settings for AMD DX2, but no POST with that setting. BIOS is 2.04.

Now i see - only 5V CPU are supported! So, no way i could use this CPU on this MBO! Need to see are there any 5V AMD 486 100MHz. Thanks for all the answers!

You can also look for voltage regulator interposer to out between your CPU and the socket.

Hi,
they are hard to find, and very expensive (and who knows will the CPU be recognized after that). I would rather try to do that myself, but i need MBO scheme. If someone knows how to change voltage for CPU (from 5 to 3.3) on this board, please let me know how.
Thanks

😁 😁 😁
On the right side of the photo there is a 5volts Intel DX2/66 cpu.
Why don't you use that one?

EDIT: Ok, it might be an DX2/50 only, so for 25MHz bus. But with a good cooler, it will likely run fine on 66MHz

Thank you for the picture, it is added to the page.

If you have time and energy, a bios backup would be welcome too 😀
