Hey all,

I have a number of old devices such as my Amiga A1200, several Win95 and Win98 machines. I'd quite like to recreate browsing the internet from back in the day on them.

Now the way back machine has an archive of old web sites but these can't be displayed in an old browser. I tried using a Web Rendering Proxy but it's not a great experience.

What I'm thinking is making a local copy on my own network of old websites that I can browse like they were originally.

I know it's a weird project. But does anyone have an advice on how to achieve this?

Ideally it would be a way of making a local copy of websites in bulk from wayback machine, then hosting them on a local web server. Should be simple... In theory

Thanks everyone 😀

WebOne Proxy lets you redirect to the Wayback Machine for old sites.

Huh that sounds interesting. Just did a Google search but couldn't find any guide.

Is there any guide on setting this up? Presumably I point IE/Netscape on an old machine to the proxy

It's okay. Got it working. I was testing with modern IE on another machine and the default MSN page doesn't work with the proxy. Tried Google and loaded fine 😀

So far I'm very impressed. A few complicated websites don't open like GameSpot.com which isn't that surprising given the CSS and JavaScript going on. This is honestly great.

Way better than a WRP

Thank you so much

Did you know there's a search engine to find good old websites aka "Classic Web" -> https://wiby.me/, it is also reachable via http:// (http://wiby.me/) for old devices which don't support latest TLS standards.

I had also some thoughts about creating something like a "RetroNet" in the last years - websites which are viewable on (very) old devices/OSes.

Maybe you can also test my website (https://soggi.org/, with "http://" for very old devices/browsers) on your machines and give some feedback!? It is designed to work on nearly everything with HTML support, but unfortunately has no responsive design (1024*xxx px are very recommended).

kind regards

I will try this out 😀 ironically one website that doesn't work with the other method, the WebOne Proxy, is the wayback machine. Doesn't work after searching for the URL to go back.

I'd happily pay for a "RetroNet" type thing with websites from old or personal websites. That would be super cool. Like Geocities but also with old websites that have been pulled from wayback machine.

Then again if I had my way I'd also have MSN back too 🤣 but at least IRC still works on old hardware

I'll report back shortly after trying your links

Theoldnet.com does this. Also they have a proxy service were you set the year as port and the pages you visit load from this year from the internet archive:

This is fantastic! Thank you. I might make my own website that has no TLS and a basic layout and link to a lot of these other websites. Plus I might post guides and tips as well as old websites that still work etc

I would do that, if I'd have the time for doing that...of course for free / w/o payment - it's hard work to mirror old pages and make them HTML 4.01 strict compatible (HTML standards were ignored like nothing back then), you have to edit every page manually. I only want to have fully compatible pages laying on my webspace.

Saving old content and bringing it to the presence is a never ending story, especially if you want to preserve the look from back in the days and not only the content (text, images).

I just have the time to bring back a small amount of articles from being buried or somehow lost.

Browservice works much better. Both have the same concept and I think these projects should merge to create one that could work with more host platforms.

Thanks for posting this I love it - the modern web is amazing but I do miss old web; so simple and personal.

In my opinion the modern web is often extremely bloated by extensive use of JSS, CSS, annoying ads and trackers w/o any additional value.

If you know any valuable classic website, feel free to submit it to wiby.me by using "Submit a page here!" in the upper right.

What kind of pages get indexed?

Pages must be simple in design. Simple HTML, non-commerical sites are preferred.
Pages should not use much scripts/css for cosmetic effect. Some might squeak through.
Don't use ads that are intrusive (such as ads that appear overtop of content).
Don't submit a page which serves primarily as a portal to other bloated websites.
If you submit a blog, submit a few of your articles, not your main feed.
If your page does not contain any text or uses frames, ensure a meta description tag is added.
Only the page you submit will be crawled.

Note: I'm not connected to wiby.me in any way, I just support the idea of this project.
