I've read about them and tried to search. Best I could find are K6-iii stickers... I am interested to add to my collection "the fastest" socket7 CPU ever made.
Pretty sure if I have one, it'll sooner or later end up in a build 😀

They show up once in awhile in the trading section of cpu-world.com which is often better prices than eBay as well

They are overpriced and overhyped IMO. Sure, they can be downclocked using SetMul which gives them a lot of performance range. However, I would personally just build two separate systems: one for DOS and a second, much more powerful one for Windows 9x gaming.

A Pentium 3 or an Athlon system will easily outperform a K6-3+ build under Win9x, while a Pentium MMX can provide some decent slowdown options under DOS.

PC#1: Pentium MMX 166 / Soyo SY-5BT / S3 Trio64V+ / Voodoo1 / YMF719 / AWE64 Gold / SC-155
PC#2: AthlonXP 2100+ / ECS K7VTA3 / Voodoo3 / Audigy2 / Vortex2
PC#3: Athlon64 3400+ / Asus K8V-MX / 5900XT / Audigy2
PC#4: i5-3570K / MSI Z77A-G43 / GTX 970 / X-Fi

K6-2+'s are your best bet, since they're K6-3's with half the L2 (only a bit slower really). K6-3 and 3+'s are more or less extinct in terms of being sold.

Presario 5284: K6-2+ 550 ACZ @ 600 2v, 256MB PC133, GeForce4 MX 440SE 64MB, MVP3, Maxtor SATA/150 PCI card, 16GB Sandisk U100 SATA SSD
2007 Desktop: Athlon 64 X2 6000+, Asus M2v-MX SE, Foxconn 7950GT 512mb, 4GB DDR2 800, Audigy 2 ZS, WinME/XP

You can PM John on cpu-world, looks like he has 5x K6-III/400AHX 2.4V in stock at the moment.

https://www.cpu-world.com/forum/profile.php?m … iewprofile&u=40

He keeps a spreadsheet of all CPUs he has for sale (massive). I've purchased many CPUs from him. Unfortunately postage to AUD has become expensive now as he cannot put in letters anymore!

The K6-3+ CPUs went up to 550Mhz. The K6-2+ CPUs went up to 570Mhz.

Either way, they are going to be way faster than a regular K6-III as they have higher default clocks and can generally overclock to 600Mhz+ with ease.

Agreed! The K6-3 is popular because phil of phil's computer lab made so many (excellent) videos about them.

(PS: The VIA C3 "Nehemiah" is way better, but don't tell anyone nobody seems to know yet 😜).

Mmm but the k6+ is great for dos. It's one of a few options for getting down to slow 386 speeds without building a 386.

I have a k6-3+ pure dos and a via c3 Ezra for win95...both slow down nicely and complement each other.

Absolutely. What I meant was, for the current price of a K6-3+ CPU and a Super Socket 7 motherboard, you can build two systems which will offer you similar performance.

It's one of a few options for getting down to slow 386 speeds without building a 386.

A Pentium MMX 166 can go down to 386DX-25 speed with both caches disabled. I've tested mine with the original Wing Commander and 3DBench2 and it's working as expected.

Agree, I have a via c3 build and I can go from 386sx until P2 350 . Also can change fav from 133 and 100 but no one cares for via c3

Exactly. The labeling on late K6-2+ and K6-3+ was pretty arbitrary based on marketing requirements rather than chip performance. I've yet to come across one that doesn't do 600MHz.

Must say that affordable (< EUR 25) K6plus CPUs do occasionally pop up on eBay with Buy It Now option every now and then. For obvious reasons they tend to disappear quickly. I actually found it easier to get a K6-2+ and 3+ than an original K6-3.

I paid for a K6-III+/550ACR yesterday. Bought a while back as a group buy on the CPU-World forums, for a very fair price considering what they can sell for.

Nehemiah all the way 😀 I have a K6 III+ system, but my C3 build wins hands down and is why its my main retro rig.

I have the opposite experience with my K6-III+ CPUs. I've owned 3 of them (400ATZ) and none of them was ever able to hit 600MHz reliably, even with voltage bumps. One of them was mostly stable, but it would always hang at some point. I've tried with different mainboards even but to no avail. 550MHz though is pretty much guaranteed.

I'm guessing that the lower speed rated ones will not clock as high as the higher rated ones. I'd have to check, but I think the lowest K6-2+ or K6-III+ I have is either rated 450 or 500Mhz.

A 333? Is that a 95 or 66 MHz FSB? (or both?)

[Edit] Apparently, google is my friend .. It can run both, it seems 😀

I bought a k6-3+ 450 on ebay for like $22 shipped about 5 years ago.
The seller had like 25 of them, there were a time they were pretty easy to come by. I'm not sure they still are though.
