If you like the AWE get the AWE, Sound is a personal preference and no matter what you pick someone will say you should have gotten something else.

Fully agree. I have a soft spot for AWE cards since I always dreamed of having an AWE32 as a kid (didn't know Roland was a thing back then). And there are some games which make great use of the on-board ROM + soundfonts, as shown here: AWEstruck...

That said, as I now own both an AWE64 and a Roland Sound Canvas, I feel compelled to set the record straight when someone says they sound similar. But it's perfectly fine to appreciate both for what they are.

PC#1: Pentium MMX 166 / Soyo SY-5BT / S3 Trio64V+ / Voodoo1 / YMF719 / AWE64 Gold / SC-155
PC#2: AthlonXP 2100+ / ECS K7VTA3 / Voodoo3 / Audigy2 / Vortex2
PC#3: Athlon64 3400+ / Asus K8V-MX / 5900XT / Audigy2
PC#4: i5-3570K / MSI Z77A-G43 / GTX 970 / X-Fi

Yeah tbh I like both awe and Roland.

You also made a good point though about the 1868f. Especially since most of my immediate SC use will be within windows, which has that crippled sc-55 anyway.

For future proofing it would make more sense to use windows SF for now and buy the x2gs later.

Also weird I swear the gold had headers but the value didn't. Guess I was thinking about the ram modules.
