CPU: Intel Pentium III EB 933 MHz
Motherboard: Asus CUV4X-C
RAM: SDRAM 384 MB 133 MHz
GPU: GeForce 4 TI 4200
Soundcard: Sound blaster live! 5.1

This PC has an issue, the motherboard has a max AGP speed of 4x and in windows the nvidia drivers just gives me 2x, could this setup create some conflicts etc. ?

More likely just another 'win' for crappy VIA chipsets and their godawful AGP - turns into a running battle between the card (8x), the board BIOS (4x) & the nvidia drivers (2x) for supremacy. There was a registry fix that sometimes worked / sometimes didn't (think it was part of the VIA 4-in-1 package or one of the card tuning apps).

The first concern should be stability.

If it works, I would not fight it and leave it at 2X . If it does not work at 2x, running it faster (4x) will not improve it (prevent it from crashing) and 2x likely won't be much of a bottleneck, if at all on your system anyway. If you have not already done so, make sure to install VIA 4-in-1 drivers appropriate for your OS and chipset.

Before you do any changes from a working or mostly working state, I suggest making a backup, as it makes reverting easier and faster in case you need to do trial and error to find the best Nvidia and VIA 4-in-1 driver combination for your setup.

It seems to work well at 2x, i asked because i have to be honest, Deus ex is making my life kinda hellish, so i though "could it be the AGP ?" then again no other game gives me issues and if i use opengl or nglide the game works without freezes, it's just D3D.

Nope it doesn't work, i can only go up to 2x, even with rivatuner i can't enable fastwrites at 4x and overall any use of d3d crashes the system with agp at 4x.

Do you have VIA 4-in-1 drivers installed ?

There was a registry patch making the rounds in the past that may work:

; For Win9x/WinME
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\System]
"EnableVia4x"=dword:00000001

To go back to AGP 2x:
; For Win9x/WinME
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\System]
"EnableVia4x"=dword:00000000

I would guess that this is what Rivatuner does .

Apparently, some versions of 4-in-1 drivers work better with certain chipsets.

I use v4.43 on my KT7A and never had any issues with AGP 8x cards, despite my board only supporting 4x. Your chipset is different though.

PC#1: Pentium MMX 166 / Soyo SY-5BT / S3 Trio64V+ / Voodoo1 / YMF719 / AWE64 Gold / SC-155
PC#2: AthlonXP 2100+ / ECS K7VTA3 / Voodoo3 / Audigy2 / Vortex2
PC#3: Athlon64 3400+ / Asus K8V-MX / 5900XT / Audigy2
PC#4: i5-3570K / MSI Z77A-G43 / GTX 970 / X-Fi

Great. And what do you get performance-wise?

The board was retired because of PS2 I/O malfunction and I did not test 2x/4x AGP speeds at the time.
But here a benchmark note as indication:
XFX ti 4200 / ASUS CUV4X / 850/100 MHz FCPGA@1.133/133
3DMark2001 @ 1024x768x32 / score 7102

Oh, ok.... I do not know what Rivatuner does; used it maybe only once long ago. This patch did work though.cuvcuv.jpg

That's ME it could behave differently from my C version.

For WinME i can only find these 3 https://www.asus.com/supportonly/CUV4X-C/HelpDesk_Download/ i'm currently using the 4.37V version, i don't know if using the previous driver will help.

Try these:

According to some posts here, that version should be good for your Apollo Pro chipset as well.

Thank you, also as an update, i installed the game on my Athlon XP PC in the sign on the partition with WinME on and it works buttery smooth all maxed out, i used only the goty patch and the standard d3D renderer.

Nope, still totally unstable at 4x, i'm starting to believe that a card meant for agp8x is just unstable on this motherboard.

Can you try setting it to AGP 1x ? That's what it took to get a Radeon 9700 (8x) on my 440BX (2x) board stable .
