Hi! sorry my english

I use my jornada 720 since... puff... 2003 in my everyday working needs. Most of the time i just write small docs, excel files with stock changes of my bussines, small databases, and appointment/emails/task of day

Im very very happy with my jornada, but i realize, because is too old, start give my some hardware probems (screen most of time) and battery even if still very good, not last like new

I dont found a replacement yet, any ideas??

For me is very VERY important

Small size, not bigger than jornada
Windows. I dont care CE or XP, but NO win vista+
Full qwerty keyboard, with F1-F12. I still use a lot, some DOS programs, like wordperfect, lotus, Turbo pascal, etc
At least one USB for sync with PC. With the jornada i use irda, and is OK but too slow sometimes
Easy to find battery, replacement.. etc
cheap

Not very important but very welcome

Wifi, bluetooth

Not really sure of many alternatives in that small form factor. Maybe a Sony Vaio P or UX, GPD Micro PC, or OQO?

There's also Aliexpress packed with all sorts of mini-PC's like the One Netbook One series.

If you went Linux/Android and modern, there are options like the Gemini PDA and Lisperati 1000.

Or maybe some of the netbooks from 10 years ago would fit the need, but of course be marginally larger.

Along with the DIY Lisperati, there are a whole host of "cyberdeck" designs out there to make something that you see fit for your needs. A small 40% - 60% keyboard + screen + PC/104 motherboard would be neat to build and have full DOS + Windows compatibility.

As far as staying within the same era and with Windows CE goes, there's the Jornada 728 and the Mobilepro 900/900C.

Some things to note if you're not already aware:

  • Both would double the amount of RAM
  • Both can still be bought online from UsedHandhelds (including new batteries) which has sold various HPCs for as long as I can remember -- at least since the early 2000s
  • The MP 900C is the same as the MP 900 but with Windows CE 4.2 in ROM (which is better than HPC2000 from a usefulness perspective in my opinion)
  • The MP 900/900C is a bit larger than the Jornadas but that gets you a bit more screen real estate and (more importantly) a bigger keyboard that in my opinion was a lot easier to type on than the tiny keys of the Jornadas. Although you can buy a larger, external keyboard for the Jornadas (though you'd need to lug it around too) -- UsedHandhelds still sells this as well for what it's worth.
  • The MP 900/900C has USB host, so you can plug external keyboards and mass storage devices up to it.
  • The MP 900/900C has IrDA 1.1/FIR, which is capable of 4Mbps vs. the Jornadas' IrDA 1.0/SIR which is limited to 115.2Kbps.
  • The MP 900/900C has a slightly newer and faster CPU -- a 400MHz XScale PXA255 ARMv5 CPU
  • The MP 900/900C is a little heavier than the Jornadas
  • You can get a VGA out cable for the MP 900/900C, which gives you higher resolution at 800x600, if you care about that sort of thing
