So I’ve got old laptop, Toshiba 430CDT from 1996-97. It has Pentium 120, 16mb Ram and C&T HIQV32 (CT65550) videocard.

Take a look at Z:

It loads UniVBE and that is it, computer freeze. If i disable it same story, just black screen and computer is frozen.

KKND crash without error.

Also GTA 1 won’t run in 24 mode. If it matters.

My videocard is not suitable for these games? Where to start digging?

Hmm the spec PDF says the 430CDT it has 2Mb vram on a C&T HIQV32 (CT65550): Phils: http://www.minuszerodegrees.net/manuals/Toshi … cifications.pdf
so why does Univbe say a 82c455 and only 512k ? Maybe that is the issue ? Or maybe I do not know 🤣
What exact amount of Vram and what exact C&T chipset is in your laptop ?

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun

Vorob, I tested on two laptops with the same chip - Toshiba 510CD & Fujitsu LifeBook 635T, have same crash when launching Z, so probably yes - the chip is not compatible.

Mine say same 512K, that's wrong, actually 2Mb. Could be Univbe issue?

I looked and the game Z includes UniVBE 5.2 but only 5.3a and up support C&T 65550.
Are you using the games version of VBE ? Maybe you could try v5.3a ?? It should be compatible with the VBElib in the game, not sure if versions 6+ would be...
From the 5.3a readme:
The following is a complete list of all the new chips that have been added to the 5.3a release since the 5.2 release of SciTech Display Doctor.
This is on the list >> Chips & Technologies 65550/54 LCD

Just a thought.....

Maybe this could help (especially if your video card's BIOS already has some level of VESA support) :
"No"UniVBE: Try to find test games or testers that want to helper me with this project

That thread also references this Re: VESA Fix Utility Listing (for old video cards) which may be something else to try.

Well... I've tried some things, but none of them work. I don't get it.

I've installed SciTech Display Doctor 6.53 which detects my video card without an issue

No luck. I've tried transferring *.drv file, nothing changed.

I also downloaded SciTech UniVBE 6.53 but this thing doesn't work:

But! If I disable UniVBE detect in-game it will use "Driver file is configured for standard VGA" and the game also won't work. Maybe I need smth else?

I also tried few other utilities you've provided, like adding additional resolution support. No luck.

Hmm I am guessing you already tried searching the old archives. Here is some info if not.

The archive of SciTech for v5.3a with only one entry to the game Z and one item for C&T 165550:
https://web.archive.org/web/19970606200809/ht … .com/index.html
"Chips & Technologies
Low resolution video modes in the 6555x series do not work properly in this release on the LCD panel. On an external monitor they function correctly. "

What video mode are you setting the game at using Setvideo.exe ?

For v6.53: https://web.archive.org/web/19990418105744/ht … wn_sdd_win.html
The only thing listed is same thing as 5.3a for Z ...
