I've replaced the temporary bodge wire with a more robust resistor lead. Not the prettiest one, but this should do the trick. I normally do board level repairs on 8 bit equipment. This is my first one on more modern stuff. I'll cover it with solder mask after dealing with the passives. They are the ones in the battery charging circuit. Too bad that a normal CR2032 battery holder does not fit on the board.

Good job tracking down the problem. In my experience integrated chipsets are rarely the issue.
More often than not, it's due to a severed trace.
One thing to check for in the future is to see if any arsehole dropped their screwdriver somewhere. I've seen that a few times.
