Hello all,

I am building a retro 486DX-33, and I would like to remove the existing SB16 and replace with my AWE64 Value (CT4500).
Do you recommend this, and if so, please provide a link to DOS/Win3.1 drivers.

Re: 386 / 486 Build: Your Suggestions Please?

Thanks!

UPDATE:
Found these at Phil's Computer Lab, and they work great!

If you have one of the earlier SB16 cards, it would be more era correct.
If you have a vibra based SB16, an AWE64 would probably be a good upgrade. AWE64 has pretty clean sounding output relative to the earlier sound blasters. I think the only real gripe people have about them is that they don't have authentic OPL3s.

Yes, according to Sound Blaster 16 of Choice?and https://nerdlypleasures.blogspot.com/2012/07/ … ibulations.html, my Sound Blaster 16 (CT2900) has the real Yamaha chip for OPL3!

The thing that I am baffled is that why the AWE64 is a highly praised card then? Is it for Windows performance?

Because I can easily use my SB16 (CT2900) in conjunction with MUNT to get an period correct experience.

I wouldn't go as far as to say the AWE64 is highly praised, but it has a fairly low SNR for a creative labs product, is one of the only sound blasters with relatively bug free MPU401 (through the joystick port), and gives you 100% SB and SB16 compatibility.
