Hi all
I have a 430TX Totem Socket 7 Motherboard with 233MMX CPU
it supports up to 75mhz, and it's the currently settings with 3.5x
The CPU original voltage is 2.8.
When I overclock it to 266, It's only stable with voltage of 3.38.
I tried 2.9, 3.2 but it restarts on dos games suddenly.

It has a heatsink + fan which is hot to the touch but I can stay my hand on it.
I have seen people wrote that they overclock with original 2.8 voltage.

I think it is not worth to torture Pentium MMX with such a high voltage. Performance increase is minimal and you risk burning your CPU.
If your motherboard supports lower voltages, you may try AMD K6-2 400 MHz (it interprets 2x multiplier as 6x - so 6x66MHZ = 400MHz).

1) VLSI SCAMP /286@20 /4M /CL-GD5422 /CMI8330
2) i420EX /486DX33 /16M /TGUI9440 /GUS+ALS100+MT32PI
3) i430FX /K6-2@400 /64M /Rage Pro PCI /ES1370+YMF718
4) i440BX /P!!!750 /256M /MX440 /SBLive!
5) iB75 /3470s /4G /HD7750 /HDA

The pic of the heatsink is from a top angle, so it's hard to judge the height of the heatsink but it looks like one of those models that are very flat.
I wouldn't be surprised if you could get the CPU to remain cooler if you upgraded the HSF.

Btw, the 2 higher fins on either side of the heatsink don't count 😜

Every 233 MMX should run with 262 MHz (75MHz FSB) at the stock voltage. My best Pentium MMX P55C runs with 300 MHz (100x3) at 2,8V stock voltage! Try out a better heatsink with a thermal compound on the CPU core.

I use this Socket A/370 heatsink on my MMX 233@262MHz (75MHz FSB) 2,8V. Also runs fine with 291MHz (83MHz FSB) at this voltage, but for daily use, 262MHz is more than enough for a MMX machine.

Better heatsink couldn't hurt, that's quite a bit of overvoltage.

The Gigabyte GA586TX3 actually had a temp sensor under the CPU.

In any case, you're risking a five Euro CPU.

I like jumpers.

Yes, if you have luck to find one for this price on the flea market...The Ebay Price of a 233 MMX is around~19€.

OK, it depends on the looks and that's basically the "wholesale" price:

Interesting that there's always a gold digger bidding about 9.58 € for these. Including some margin, that might be the hard price floor for any CPGA Pentium 😉

Well, let's say if he burns it, there's the learning experience and the excuse to invest in a fancy K6!

I like jumpers.

I can see my motherboard supports up to 300mhz K6
Its a socket 7, not super

430TX was a late chipset, the last by Intel. They all should do k6-2, if not III+

I like jumpers.

Some socket 7 board do support lower voltage. As does my IBM aptiva, supports 2,2v on a Ali IV chipset. And I've got a s7 boards with sis chipset that supports 2,0 and up the way any super7 does.

And I can agree with most people: the sink you use is fine for stock MMX, but for oc I'd recommend a large sink as well.
I
've ran my 200MMX at 300 (3x100) with 2,9v for some time with a socket A cooler which has a copper base and aluminium fins.
Also had one at 3,5x83 on an Intel chipset for a while, but the SCSI controller began to bug. Probably the PCI speed was to much for it. It now runs a cyrix MII at 225MHz and 75MHz bus.

Stuck at 10MHz...

I would stay with the 233 MMX and change the heatsink to a better one. A MMX CPU is better for DOS Gaming, because of THIS.

And HERE is the Setmul Test with Wing Commander 1 on my 233 MMX System.
