What keeps my P5BV3+ off the "most wanted" list?

https://theretroweb.com/hardware/motherboards/dfi-p5bv3-plus

Supports 100MHZ fsb, K6-III+, has agp slot, three isa, two USB, etc. etc.

I'm just sort of curious what makes a "top dog" SS& board at this point...

I can't see why, but many consider the ATX boards superior.

Another minor factor: Some late boards supported UDMA-66.

I like jumpers.

I wouldn't call ATX "superior" but they can be much more convenient than (Baby) AT boards:

  • Baby AT form factor has an unsolvable defect: CPU heatsink / fan can easily conflict with longer interface cards.
  • Serial and parallel ports (and in some cases, USB ports) require ribbon cables. AT chassis often have separate openings for them, but using ATX chassis (that expects those ports integrated on MB) would occupy at least one interface card slot.
  • While late Baby AT boards have similar size of mATX boards, they still require full ATX chassis.

I think I prefer the P5BV3+ over the 5AX.

The Ali chipset seems to sometimes have issues with Voodoo 3s, I've seen that in the GA-5AA. The P5BV3+ seems to run the Cyrix chips very nicely.

AT cases look more retro, so that is a plus.

ATX is a lot easier to work with though, you've got USB and PS/2 onboard, so that is nice.

With those requirements in mind, only Asus P5A, Gigabyte GA-5AX, and MSI MS-5169 remain in the list, with GA-5AX rev. 5.2 being the newest of the three.

Btw., I just looked at two motherboards on "the list" that I own, to compare with others of the same brand. And found two obvious errors- wrong chipset, wrong form factor.
Which is a pity, these lists can be really helpful.
Is there anyone taking care of the Wiki on a regular bases or a thread for it?
I know I could request a login, but I'm not quite OCD enough for that... 😀

I like jumpers.

If you check ebay pretty much every day for this stuff, eventually you'll find a fairly priced one and be able to scoop it up (relatively) cheap. You just have to be diligent in searching. Awhile ago when I was on a SS7 board buying spree, a specific board I wanted was an Aopen AX59 Pro (shhh it's not on "the list," let's keep it that way) so I was searching for that specific thing. Well one day I found one, only it was part of the description for an entire PC, and it was listed for $60 buy it now plus shipping, for the whole PC! I had to do a double and triple take reading the listing to make sure I was seeing what I was seeing, because the board alone should sell for double that. I jumped on it and paid less than $120 shipped for a complete custom built SS7 PC, beige case and all. It was just lucky timing. Pretty sure anybody else on this forum would have jumped on it as well. I just happened to see it first because I was searching frequently.

Ah I didn't notice the formfactor was different. The CPU blocking the PCI slots (No voodoo2?) would be a major bummer...

Even on sites like Amibay, some sellers vastly inflate prices, while most are quite fair.

The slot placements on most (Super) Socket 7 AT motherboards really sucked when installing longer cards, something that the ATX form factor improved upon by standardizing the CPU placement at the top of the motherboard. The Voodoo2 on that DFI motherboard could only be placed on the PCI slot that is near the AGP slot.
