I know trinitron tubes seem to use some sort of plastic film that prevents glare, but how were traditional CRT monitors made to have their screens anti-glare? Is it a film, or is it a special glass?

I ask this, because I already removed LCD films that were anti-reflective, and they became glossy screens, and I have a monitor here that has some scratches, on the tube, and I also like the appearance of the IBM CRTs that were glossy.

There are several methods, but it is a special deposited layer that can be washed off with some effort or a plastic layer that can be peeled off (glue residues can be pain to get rid of). There's a reason why all the manuals tell not to use any detergents on the screens as it will damage the antiglare layer. You will want to replace the layer after removing it as usually you dramatically lower contrast in ambient light conditions, since often a significantly paler tube often comes up from under the layer. A friend used car window tinting film with good results but it is a pain to put on as any dust or air bubbles will be very bad...
