Anyone have any experience using the Promise Ultra66 card?
When I install it into the PC it just hangs at Verifying DMI Pool Data ......

I tried this in my P133 also and it does the same thing.

The PC sees the card and the Ultra66 sees the SD adapter. Maybe it don't like the adapter?
Has anyone has any luck using the Ultra66 with an SD card adapter?

Yes, I have an Ultra 66 in my 440BX board, and a Ultra 133 in my VIA board (both Socket 7 motherboard). Here are some stuff to try.

- Disable either the On-Board Primary or Secondary IDE Channel in the BIOS, that corresponds to the channel you are using on the Ultra 66
- Some BIOS's (Like Award) have a Boot Device Order, try either using "SCSI,C,A" or "LS120,C,A"... I have had success with either.

Also you might want to update the Firmware on that Ultra 66 card. You can acutally get the DOS Firmware Flashing tool and Latest Firmware from Promise's website - https://www.promise.com/Support/downloadcenter.

Hope that helps!

I tried disabling IDE channel 1 on the motherboard and the PC still hangs at Verifying DMI Pool Data .....

I do not have any options in the BIOS to set it to boot from SCSI or LS120. Just A, C and CDROM.

Any other ideas? Would love to get a larger HDD working on this machine.

Have an Ultra66 in an old BX system somewhere, but it's been modded to operate as a FastTrak66 raid so not sure how relevant some of the following might be.

My notes from the time (2000) agree with @majestyk re. the reset ESCD trick - it's even in the Promise troubleshooting guide I have...

"Reset Data Configuration (ESCD) -To Reset the ESCD you must enter your System Bios and then locate the option. In most BIOS's it can be found under PCI/PNP Configuration, but this will vary from board to board, especially on boards with a Phoenix or AMI Bios."

I'm less certain on the next point though - I have a note that says don't allow the motherboard bios to auto-detect the drives (so disable this in the mb bios) as the Ultra66 already does this and allowing both can cause hangs, though not sure if this would help with such limited boot options of A, C & CDROM.

I found the option for Reset Data Configuration in the BIOS. I set it to enable and then turned off Auto on all drives and disabled IDE 1 and 2.
After saving and rebooting the ULTRA66 just hangs @ IDE BUS Master Enabled.

When I go back into the BIOS the option for Reset Data Configuration: Enabled is set back to Disabled. It is like this option is resetting or not saving but everything else is.

Anything else I need to change in the BIOS? I added some pics of the BIOS.
Any other option for adding larger HDDS to the system without using overlay software? A card that would work with this motherboard?

On the "PNP Configuration Setup" page in the BIOS, try setting the "Resource Controlled by" to Manual or ISA. This will usually show all of the ISA & PCI slots in the system. Try setting the PCI slot that the Ultra66 to "Non-PNP".

The only other thing I can think of is trying a BIOS patcher... but that can be pretty convoluted. If your motherboard is running an Award BIOS, this might be a way to go.

I have done it on a few of my older Socket 7 systems, using the "BIOS Patcher 4.23" tool from roms.by - https://rom.by/. That site seems to be gone now, but the name of the ZIP file to search google for is "bp-4_23.rar". You will need some other programs to run it. Necroware has a pretty good video on the subject - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwZT40sRMzM.

If you are planning on going down the BIOS patcher road, make sure you back up your original BIOS first... just in case!

The "reset configuration data" option resetting itself to "disabled" again is the normal behaviour, because you only need to run it once in certain cases.
Have you considered updating the controller BIOS to version 1.8?

I was able to update the card to the latest version. (2.00 B18)

The Ultra66 now has a stage where it detects the attached HDDS.
It passes this and shows the HDD card connected but then it still hangs @ IDE BUS Master Enabled.

@ torafuma
Under Manual PNP Configuration Setup the only two options I have is Legacy ISA and PCI/ISA PnP.

Looking like this card just will not work on this motherboard sadly.

Attached is the full BIOS if you see anything I am missing.

If this is PCI issue do you try to change PCI IRQ Activated by LEVEL?

If this is disk detection issue you can try to autodetect disk by bios or set it to type 1 (10Mb disk)

If this is boot issue try to change boot order to NONE (SCSI)

PS. There is PCI config jumper on motherboard as i remember my PA-2005 😀

I can not seem to win with this PC!

Since I got a mouse working I installed Win98SE and some games.

Every-time I try to play a Lucas Arts game the PC crashes and sometimes I get this error.

The program tried to execute an invalid instruction
Fault location: 814e:eb29
Interrupts in service: None

I was able to play some Sierra games without issue, so far only Lucas Arts games are causing the crash. Specifically Monkey Island 1 and 2.

I tried swapping the RAM out but didn't change anything.

Any Ideas what would be causing this?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sovled!
Using SetMul seems to have fixed this crash. I didn't know Lucas Arts games was effected by speed. My retro PC that is dying was a P200MMX and it had no issues running Monkey Island.
I guess the extra 33MHZ was too much 🤣!
Most games I have that had speed issues don't load or run super fast, never saw one run a bit and then crash with an error like that.
That is really odd. Never heard of a game issue on a 200mmx vs 233 mmx
How is your cpu thermal paste? Cooling? Are you getting to 233 via 66x3.5?
Another dumb question maybe someone can answer for me.
This motherboard has a VIA VT82C585VP + VT82C586 chipset.
I can not find drivers online for this motherboard chipset. Should I worry about this or just use the ones Win98 installed?
Anyone know where to find these chipset drivers?
New copper heatsink and thermal paste installed and I even modded/added an extra fan for cooling.
I am getting 233 from setting the jumper on the MB to 1.5 x but the 233 sees this as 3.5.
That would be jumper "PCI2 ID: PCI2ID" (default 1-2).
Just give it a try.
No go on changing the PCI Jumper. Still hangs at the same spot.
Just don't look like the Ultra66 is going to work with this board since it cant set boot order for SCSI.
Since I was not able to get the Ultra66 working on this board I decided to test some different 32GB (Max size this board supports.) drives.
SD adapter was bought off eBay. Maybe you could get a better adapter?
SD Card is a 32GB SanDisk Ultra rated at 120 MB/s.
I was shocked at how much slower the SD was compared to the CF and SSD. Also while I could enable DMA mode games would freeze and stutter making DMA mode unusable.
The SD results are with DMA not enabled as it was too unstable.
SD results attached.
Tested using ATTO Disk Benchmark, Crystal Disk Mark 2.2 and Roadkil's Disk Speed 2.0
Compact flash adapter was also from eBay.
CF card is an SanDisk Extreme PRO rated for up to 160 MB/s.
Windows DMA mode was stable and overall was a major improvement over the SD card.
I found some 32GB mini M.2 SATA drives made by Dogfish on Amazon.
I also paired it with an mSATA enclosure by SABRENT and an SATA to IDE adapter from eBay.
Windows DMA mode worked great using the SSD and it performed the best on the benchmark tests I ran.
The CF was close and I am contemplating using one CF drive for the ease of copying files over.
I only ordered one set to test with as I had never heard of Dogfish and wanted to see first if it would work and how well it performed.
After testing the drives I ordered two more setups for this Dogfish SSD hoping to get three 32GB HDDs working in this Machine.
SSD results attached:
