Hi, I recently noticed a weird noise, loud but not THAT loud, coming from the CPU fan if my Pentium 166 MMX.
I'm currently using a heatsink and a fan on top.
Could you guys recommend what kind of fan/heatsink should I go for since I want to replace it?
Would any socket 7 be fine? Or any other compatible?
You can repair it by complete fan disassembly, deep cleaning, oil (I recommend the car oil 5W30 - forget the too fine oils that evaporate with the slightest heat) and reassembling.

I would recommend the same solution, but after dismounting a fan, make sure to give its axle a healthy dose of WD40 just to clean it. After it evaporates, apply said motor oil or silicone oil. If the fan is significantly worn, you may apply white lithium grease (in form of spray) to its axle.
Any old socket 7 heatsink should do.
Some 370 and socket a heatsinks may work. But try and see.
In general try to avoid the super high tension clips though.

Assuming you have a standard Socket 7 heatsink, you can just replace the fan and reuse the existing heatsink.
I've been using Noctua fans for CPU cooling on older systems: https://noctua.at/en/products/fan
They're extremely quiet, and they have a variety including 60mm which is perfect for older CPU coolers.

Yes, that was my idea eventually, just replace the fa.
Anyways, thank you all for your suggestion, if I get some spare time I might try to disassemble the thing, otherwise one of those fans above look like a feasible option.
Is use this Cooler Master Socket 370 cooler for my Pentium MMX 233 system. Runs fine since four year.
