Hi there. Recently I put together a system for Windows 98 with a gigabyte ga60xe, voodoo 5 5500, and a Pentium III 600eb, the 600mhz Pentium was temporarily there until my 1.4ghz one came. The system had worked fine for 4 days until I installed the Pentium IIIs 1.4ghz, I’ve tried changing out ram sticks, different power supply, taking out the voodoo 5, and nothing seems to work, it boots up, all the fans spin, but no beep, the green light doesn’t turn on, no video signal. I am really worried because I put lots of work into this system, and its stopped working.

I’ve changed processor back and it works for some reason. I don’t know why my new processor doesn’t work, the jumpers were set correctly. Does anyone know why this has happened???

Damn, you’re right. I thought all of the 815 chipset motherboards support tualatin. Thanks.

The majority of s370 boards won't support Tualatin out of the box (this includes i815 chipsetted boards). Heck, some s370 boards don't even support Coppermine 😜
And some s370 boards don't support Mendocino (but may damage them iirc), so it's better to not plug something into something just because the shapes match up.
Always try to read up on the parts you have before trying to put them together. With parts of this era, the fact that they mechanically fit doesn't mean they will work (and in rare cases you may break something. In very rare cases you may even bring out the fireworks by being careless).

Yeah I realised my motherboard was an xe and not an xt ga60. Which does suck. I will still be using an 815 but I will make sure it fully supports my processor. Slight bit off topic, How far can I overclock a 1.4ghz p3 with it still being stable while using thermal paste and a regular heatsink?

I'm not much into overclocking, so I can't tell you from experience how well Tualatin overclocked, but it depends on your CPU, motherboard, caps, CPU HSF and memory (and to a lesser degree your PSU and case (because of cooling)).

Before thinking of overclocking, I'd get a system working first. Btw I think overclocking these old parts is kinda useless with the risks not outweighing the benefits.

Yeah I guess going above 1.4ghz is overkill anyway

It kinda is. Still, if you want to overclock, then go ahead. There are probably several options but there are members that can tell you more info about overclocking Tualatin than I can.

Personally I think there are faster options, but none of them will be easy and cheap. One is to go for an AthlonXP (preferably Barton) with a motherboard with universal AGP, but then PSUs will be a significant issue.
Otoh there's Intel, but you're gonna be stuck with non-Intel chipsets as (afaik) none of the P4 Intel chipsets actually support AGP 2x cards.
But at least you'll have DDR, fwiw 😜
And either option will probably have bad caps by now.

Need an B-step of the i815 chipset:

  • i815 A2 SL4DF FW82815 no
  • i815EP A2 SL552 FW82815EP no
  • i815 B0 SL5NQ FW82815 yes

Easy to remember for tualatin supported chipset by looking at stepping. SL anything with N in it will be. SL5NQ and SL5NR.
