I just can't get enough of 8086 based systems. They are my favorite XT Class systems to work with. My latest acquisition is a system with a Juko Nest N3 10MHz motherboard. The is a pretty cool motherboard with 1MB of memory, 320K of which can be used as EMS memory. I had all the parts ready to go ended up with the following build:

NEC V30@10MHz CPU
8087@10MHz Math Coprocessor
ATI VGA Wonder XL24 1MB SVGA Video Card
Juko M16-X Multi I/O Board 2x Serial, 1x Parallel. High Density Floppy, and RTC (This came with the system)
Adlib Sound Card by Sun Moon Star (This is a clone Adlib card from around 1992)
3COM Etherlink III 3C509B 10Mbs Ethernet Card
Lo-Tech 1MB memory card (64K memory block @D000 for DOS UMBs)
Blue Lava Systems XT-IDE Compact Flash card (Configured a 2GB Sansdisk Ultra Compact Flash card)

I removed the SCSI adapter & CD ROM that was included as I really don't have any software for this class machine that requires a CD ROM. I swapped out the Juko D16 IDE controller and 42MB hard drive in favor of the XT IDE solution. I replaced the TexElec Adlib card for the more period correct Adlib clone card. Lastly I upgraded the ATI VGA Edge 16 for the ATI VGA Wonder XL24.

The system is running with DOS 6.22. The only thing I don't like is the Juko EMS driver chews up around 24K of memory, but using the LoTech 1MB card for upper memory helps offset that quite a bit. I have around 620,000 bytes of DOS memory with all drivers loaded. Here are a few pictures of how things turned out.

Now for a few benchmarks. The system benches very well for an XT class computer. Getting 752KBs on the XT-IDE is pretty fast an XT Class computer. Overall I am extremely happy with this build.

You know there are three turbo speeds on it, right? The turbo LED only lights up at the highest of the three. LED is software controlled more than hardware 😉

I had the same results with the benchmarks - are you using Sysinfo 4? I had that on the hard disk previously.

Yes, I was aware of the 3 speeds. The Turbo Button only toggles between 4.77MHz & 10MHz. If you want 7.16MHz you need to use the CONTROL speed setting program from the Utility Disk. I used SysInfo 6 for this benchmark. SysInfo 4.x would give a higher number. The benchmark was changed in starting in Norton Utilities 5.x.

Nice.
Always good to see XT assemblies.
Wonder what number this machine will get in Superscape ?

It comes in at 2.2 FPS. I was actually surprised it scored that high. I would have guessed less than 1 FPS.

Cool system! 👍

I recently ran 3Dbench on my PS/2 model 30 (8Mhz 8086). The result was a meager 1.2 FPS, so your score is indeed quite high!

See how it compares with the legendary V'ger XT - https://sites.google.com/site/misterzeropage/ - run all the benchmarks listed there...

I decided today to install a Lo-Tech 2MB EMS board instead of using the onboard memory for EMS for a couple of reasons. The driver in EMS 3.2 mode takes less than 4K of memory and gives me a full 2MB of EMS memory. I can use the extra 384K as a disk cache or ram drive. I haven't decided which of these is more useful. I will do some testing and report back on that.

Hey, thanks for running the test.
Do you know, your system is very fast on a clock-to-clock basis.
Perhaps one of the best out there.

For a XT Class system it is really fast. Only a 286 XT class computer like a Tandy 1000 TX/TL would outperform it on a clock per clock basis. I think what makes this motherboard so fast is that it is truly 0 wait state for RAM, ROM, Slot RAM and I/O. It has a programmable R/W wait state register at 0x70 with the following bits defined:

Board ROM - Bits 0-1 (0-1 wait states)
Board RAM - Bits 1-2 (0-1 wait states)
Slot RAM - Bits 4-5 (0-3 wait states)
I/O - Bits 6-7 (0-3 wait states)

I loaded up debug and checked the default value the 0x70 register and it is all zeros by default. The more I learn about this computer, the more I like it!

I did one last change. I replaced the top face plate for a tape drive that I had laying around. Matches the 5.25 floppy drive perfectly. The disk cache does not work as it is not compatible with a 2GB drive in the system, so the RAM disk is what I am going to end up using.

Here are couple more benchmarks for comparison to Anonymous Coward's system. I could not run Landmark 6.0 as it freezes trying to calculate the speed of the system. Landmark 2.0 works just fine however.

I have the PDF manual for this motherboard. It implies that the ISA slots stay at 4.77MHz regardless of the turbo speed setting.
Do you happen to have any tools to measure the frequency of your ISA slots?

I think I noticed the same behaviour with landmark 6 on my system.

It's slighly slower than V'ger, I'm wondering why...
Perhaps it has something to do with parity checking?
Try to toggle the J8 jumper?

Toggling the parity with J8 made no difference. The speed results are still the same. I was able to get around the issue with Landmark 6.0 by starting it with the system running at 4.77MHz and bumping it up to 10MHz with the Turbo button. Just to make sure there was no issues with memory I reran a full memory diagnostic with CheckIt 3.0. It came up clean. At least I can now include the Landmark 6.0 results for completeness. As to why it is slightly slower, my guess at this point is the memory chips being used. I am just going to leave things as is with the system running Ok. It if ain't broke, don't fix it:)

I don't have anything to test the speed of the ISA slots.
